Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (JS)

Mangaluru, Mar 22: The district administration on the order of the court on Monday March 21 destroyed Rs 16 lac worth of ganja, charas, heroin and brown sugar that had been seized in various cases between 2008 and present.

As the cases in which the ganja had been seized were disposed off by the court, it ordered the deputy commissioner and other officials concerned to destroy it. Accordingly, several bundles of ganja were set afire at Nehru Maidan in the presence of deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, Dakshina Kannada district and sessions judge Uma M G, excise joint commissioner Rajendra Prasad and other officials.

Addressing the gathering, A B Ibrahim said, "We are burning seized ganja worth Rs 16 lac, and we are doing this publicly because though this is a valuable item, it is also dangerous to society. The society, and especially the youth, should know the consequences of drug abuse. Through this exercise, we are trying to convey the message that everyone must stay away from ganja and other drugs. Let us make our society drug-free."

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner of excise L A Manjunath said, "Drug abuse is a social evil, so according to the orders of the court we have burnt the seized ganja here today. These had been seized in 17 cases between 2008 to present which are disposed off now."

Commissioner of police Chandra Sekar, ADC Kumar and others were present.

Don' t these people in uniform ever learn. Burning plastic causes toxins to be released into the air. The particulate matter increases which leads to breathing problems. You see it everyday in the city, the corporation sweepers gather the leaves and burn them along with all the rest of the luggage. This will never be a smart city when the city corporation does dumb things.

In college days, when all the leaves are over, we used to heap all the seeds and stems and all the waste and burn it slowly. Close all the windows and doors.
