Indians get the slowest internet speed in Asia: Report

New Delhi, Mar 27 (IANS) : The global average internet connection speed increased 23 percent to 5.6 Mbps in the quarter ended December 2015 compared to the same period of 2014, a report said on Wednesday.

The report “Fourth Quarter, 2015, State of the Internet Report” was released by Akamai Technologies, a global leader in content delivery network services.

“From a global perspective, the average connection speed increased 8.6 percent quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) and 23 percent year-over-year (YoY) to 5.6 Mbps, while the global average peak connection speed increased 1 percent QoQ, and increased 21 percent YoY to 32.5 Mbps,” it said.

South Korea had the highest average connection speed in Asia-Pacific region at 26.7 Mbps, while India had the lowest at 2.8 Mbps.

“This quarter’s (October to December 2015) report shows great YoY growth in average connection speeds and overall broadband adoption,” said David Belson, editor of the report.

South Korea (95.3 Mbps) and Macao (83.1 Mbps) were the only countries/regions to post double-digit quarterly gains in average peak connection speed at 10 percent and 13 percent, respectively.

“This is particularly important as consumer expectations rise and many high-profile events, like the summer games in Rio, will be streamed this year.

“The progress we are seeing across our key metrics shows that, while there’s still work to be done, more parts of the world are increasingly able to support the delivery of broadcast-quality video content online,” he added.
The report also showed each of the top 10 countries/regions saw double-digit growth in 25 Mbps broadband adoption except Hong Kong, which posted a 9.8 percent change quarter-over-quarter. Norway and Denmark saw the greatest yearly gains, the report cited.

On a global basis, close to 70 percent of the countries/regions saw a QoQ increase in unique IPv4 address counts in the last three months of 2015, up 10 percent from the July-September period of 2015.

The report also pointed out that 43 countries/regions saw IPv4 address counts grow 10 percent or more in the quarter ended December 2015 while 13 saw counts decline 10 percent or more compared with the July-September quarter of 2015.

The report also showed Britain had the fastest average mobile connection speed at 26.8 Mbps with Spain in second place at 14 Mbps. Iran had the lowest average connection speed, at 1.3 Mbps, followed by Vietnam with an average connection speed of 1.8 Mbps.

As of September 2014, India has a 15 per cent internet user penetration and is ranked 142nd, way below some of its neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Sri Lanka,"
At a time when the rest of the world defines minimum broadband speed as above 2mbps - in the US, it is 25mbps- our government (read TRAI) - still defines it as 512kbps, which is 50 times slower than the minimum speed in the US.
Without the basic infrastructure there is no hope for Digital India. All those e-learning programmes, e-government services, tele-medicine plans, and audio-video education delivery require good internet connectivity. Yet, the government shows no urgency in solving the real problem, which can end with a little insight and earnest efforts.
    The reality of 'Digital India'.
Does Indian customers forced to pay for the connectivity package of myth?Where are consumer protection act?Does our Union Minister aware of the situation?

Yes VM Moodbidri, Government have other expenses and you think it is just new expenses or it was the routine expenses that all the previous governments had?? Few of the previous governments managed this economy when the oil prices were more than 10 times higher than what they are now. Now we talk about Digital India, Make in India and recently fighting jilebi..oops gareebi. Acche din went under the bottom drawer, Ram mandir is already in the shed. Now we have Nationalism, fighting gareebi, Bharat Mata Ki Jai (until yesterday RSS did not even know how the national flag looks like with only Bhagva dwaj known to them)Sedition and not. Is this government really have any proper direction?? Remember, people did not blamed government for everything in previous years that includes Atalji's time. There must be a reason for people blaming government for everything, hmm, do you call that frustration when so many things promised to grab the power but nothing fulfilled as of now??

It's not fair to blame everything to government. Quality comes at price. If you want High-Speed internet, then you need to pay the price, accordingly.
Yes, in India the internet speed is less, compared to other countries. But What is the solution??.
Govt. can reduce the prices of Spectrum, which is auctioned to private players. But it will take some money away from their kitty, they don't want to do that. reason being is, this SPECTRUM allocation are main source of income generation to governments spending. If you reduce the price then it will affect spending.
On the one hand govt. needs to spends on OROP, 7th Pay Commission, Hikes in DA of salaries etc.. And on the other hand they have to spend on technology, launching satellites, infrastructure, roads, railways etc. They have to balance between both. If Taxes are increased, it will burden common man. So that's not an option.
So, Government needs to find a solution for this. Recently GSAT satellites have been launched. So, We want Quality service at affordable prices. Waiting for that.
