Kundapur, Mar 28: In yet another case of its kind, a farmer committed suicide late light on Saturday March 27 after he was unable to pay back loans borrowed from a bank.
The deceased has been identified as Tangachchan alias K V Thomas (54), residing at Kutyanikal in Halkal village under Jadkal gram panchayat.
It is said that Thomas had borrowed heavily, and the bank which had lent to him, had been insisting on clearance of his loan before the end of March this year.
Thomas, who had cultivated two acres of land, had grown coconut and rubber there. It is said that he had borrowed over five lac rupees from a bank for this purpose, and he was under pressure from bank officials to clear his dues before this financial year end.
Thomas, it is said, was stuck in a situation in which he was facing losses in agriculture, market price for his products was falling, and his dues in the bank were mounting. Pressure to repay loan came as the last straw on the camel's back, his close ones said.
Being stressed out and feeling directionless, Thomas consumed insecticide when no one was around, and ended his life. his wife and son were away at the church when he took this decision.
Byndoor MLA, K Gopal Poojary, visited the bereaved family and consoled the grieving members. A case of unnatural death was filed in Byndoor police station.
