Udupi, Apr 3: Water is the most common liquid on Earth. The Earth comprises of 70% of water, out of which 97% is found in seas and ocean, not suitable to drink. Whereas other found in the land mass, fit for drinking or other recreational purpose is 2.7% which alarmingly is reducing.
Importance of conserving the water should be given a thought these days. Conserving water is a must with regards for sustenance for the upcoming generation. Rainwater which can be treasured most goes flowing waste in to the rivers and then into the sea is lost forever. Measures taken nowadays for this are recharging rain water into the grounds. The rooftops of your house, PGs, Hostels, Lodge, Industries etc, should be given a pipeline connection to these ground recharging units, dried wells or bore wells.
Hence in this contrary, Joseph Rebello (38), of Santhekatte, Kallianpur has achieved a new feat in building up a new recharge ground unit for the rainwater. He being the Coordinator of Social Development Commission at Mount Rosary Church Santhekatte, teamed with his 13 members, took initiative to bring up the project into action in the Church premises. The project costing up to Rs 55,000 is set to be inaugurated by Priyanka Mary Francis, CEO, Zilla Panchayat on Tuesday, April 5 at the premises of Mount Rosary Church.
“At the very young age I was introduced to this method of water conservation. I remember when I was in 8th grade we had an entire chapter on rain harvesting process. I had grown interest towards this since then. But I had to hear the word of discouragement from many. Bringing notice to the people requires great amount of patience and understanding. People of my parish understood were my idea was leading and were happy to comply”, says Joseph who works as the social auditor at Udupi Zilla Panchayat.
“Benefits of this project are, the water soaked into the Earth keeps the land cool, decreases the heat level in the atmosphere, and the trees won’t get dried up, especially in summer. Rainwater which is usually let off into the rivers and then into the seas is wasted rather when it can be utilized by recharging the rainwater into the ground. The water gets filtered through various levels of soil and joins the underground water table. This water can then be brought up through wells or bore wells. Like this even the wells and bore wells will not be dried up during summer. The bore wells are being dug up to the depths of 2500 feet in the urban areas, and 500-600 feet in the coastal region, showing the depletion of water level. So is the rising humidity in the entire coastal belt.”
“Awareness needs to be created amongst the people of coastal region, those especially in the rural area before the shortage of water strikes in the coming days. Prevention is better than cure. The Government provides the monitory aid of Rs 83,000 under the National Rural Employee Guarantee Act for those who opt building this water recharging units. But there is a need for people to wake up from their sleep or take things for granted. The mission of saving the water cannot be achieved by an individual. Every person must take active participation in reaching this goal. ”
