Air India pilot insists for particular woman co-pilot, delays flight

Chennai, Apr 7 (PTI) : As many as 110 passengers onboard an Air India aircraft were forced to sit in the plane for two and half hours on Wednesday after its commander insisted for a "particular woman" co-pilot to operate the flight.

The incident happened at Air India's flight to Male from Chennai via Thirunanthapuram, sources said.

In between, the commander also complained of high blood pressure and was treated for the same, they said.

Interestingly, the Commander quit Air India last week and is serving a six-month notice period, the sources said.
According to the sources, the commander insisted roster section on Tuesday to schedule the woman flight officer along with him on flight AI 263/264 for Wednesday.

"Roster section, however, informed him that his demand can't be met as she was already scheduled for a Delhi flight," a source said.

Later the commander called up roster section and threatened to report sick, if the particular woman pilot was not assigned the duty with him.

"When the roster section did not oblige, he reported sick yesterday. But this morning when he turned up to operate the flight he again insisted for the same co-pilot, forcing the airline to arrange his favourite co-pilot," one of the sources alleged.

But in the process, the flight was delayed as it departed at 9.13 am against its schedule time of 7 am, the sources said.
Airline spokesperson was not available for comments.

Air India ki udaan, adhi budi adhi jawan. Mallya's 9000 crore will be recovered by force, what about the 30,0000 crore Air India has accumulated as losses. In case of Kingfisher Govt. has Mallya as scapegoat, incase of Air India who is accountable. After the tax payers money will be used to pay the staff's salary and over come the losses. So, service taken for granted. At least Kingfisher gave best service to its customers.

They should have given an option to choose from the women co-pilots lot like “Uma Bharati, Jaya Lalitha or Mayawati”!!!! Next time we too should insist for particular Air Hostess of our choice else we shall omit on other crew members!!!!! I wish these people should take birth in Saudi or Iran next time!!!!

Passengers should sue AI for the delay caused to them.
Until such claims are made, the AI service will not improve and these drunk pilots will keep holding AI to ransom to meet their whims.
What is our Civil Aviation Ministry doing about this high handedness of these pilots?

Just imagining the state of hundreds of lives once this flight hits cruising altitude and Auto-Pilot takes over. Perhaps the Cockpit Voice Recorder may reveal more information on what the commander insisted this lady co-pilot. This can happen only in a intolerant country like us. Shame, what is the DGCA doing.

Intolerant country where the Public company is tolerant enough to give in to a Pilots unreasonable demand and putting the lives of fliers in danger because of this mental pilot, instead of kicking his @$$ out of that cockpit.

The commander is throwing his weight around as he is fully aware that the management cannot do anything to him now as he has already quit the airline. I won't be surprised if he continues to behave in this manner till he actually leaves. He is clearly trying to arm twist the management. I guess if the latter can really do anything. Such actions do not cover the commander with glory. It speaks very poorly of him.
