Assam polls: 15 percent polling in first two hours


Guwahati, Apr 11 (IANS): Over 15 percent of polling was recorded in the first two hours in the second phase of voting for 61 constituencies in Assam, which started at 7 a.m. on Monday.

Large numbers of people were seen queuing before the respective polling stations since around 6 a.m. in different polling stations across the state including capital Dispur.

"So far, we have recorded 15.15 percent of polling till 9 am. We are still waiting for reports from some constituencies," said officials of the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam.

There are a total of 1,04,35,277 voters eligible to cast their ballot in the second phase. Of this 50,44,051 voters are women and 22 are third gender.

There are 525 candidates in the fray and 48 of them are women. Polling will be held in 12,699 polling stations across the state.

The first phase of polling for 65 constituencies were held in Assam on April 4 which remained peaceful and recorded 83.20 percent of polling.
