Hijab-clad Muslim woman removed from US plane

Chicago, Apr 17 (PTI): A hijab-clad Muslim woman in the US was reportedly removed from a Southwest Airlines plane after she asked for switching seats with a flight attendant saying she "did not feel comfortable" with the passenger.

Hakima Abdulle, a Muslim woman from Maryland, said she was removed from the flight from Chicago to Seattle "without any credible explanation".

Abdulle said she wanted to switch seats but instead, she ended up being removed from the flight.

This was the second such incident involving the carrier this month after an Iraqi man claimed that he was removed from a Southwest Airlines plane after a fellow passenger heard him speaking in Arabic.

Zainab Chaudry, an official with the Council on American- Islamic Relations, said in a news conference that Abdulle had boarded the Seattle-bound aircraft on Wednesday when a flight attendant told her she would not be permitted to remain on board.

Airport police then escorted Abdulle, who is of Somalian descent and was wearing a hijab, to the ticket counter, where she waited several hours for a later flight, Chaudry was quoted as saying by The Baltimore Sun.

The flight attendant and Southwest employees inside the terminal were unable to provide "any reasonable explanation" for their action, Chaudry said, adding that Abdulle, who speaks little English, was reduced to tears and "suffered extreme distress and anxiety as a result of this experience."

When police asked the flight attendant at the gate if there was any reason why Abdulle had been taken off the plane, the flight attendant reportedly replied, "No" and that she did "not feel comfortable" with the passenger.

Brandy King, a spokeswoman for Southwest Airlines, was quoted as saying that the "information available, collected at the time of the event, indicates that our employees followed proper procedures in response to this customer's actions while on board the aircraft".

"We are not in the business of removing passengers from flights without reason," King said.

Abdulle's husband Abukar Fidaw said, "She was humiliated because of her religion and the way she dressed."

In a similar incident on April 6, UC Berkeley senior Khairuldeen Makhzoomi was supposed to fly from Los Angeles to Oakland. Instead, Makhzoomi was removed from Southwest Airlines flight after speaking Arabic before his flight took off, the Daily Californian reported.

Well, we cannot say anything about this story, but reminds me of another incident:

A racist passenger on a British Airways flight from Johannesburg objects to being seated next to a black man. She asks for another seat. The flight attendant says the flight is full, but that she’ll check. She later returns to say there is one seat in first class and that the captain of the plane has approved a transfer to that seat because he feels that someone should not have to sit next to such an obnoxious person. The flight attendant then turns to the black man and invites him to the first class seat to the cheers and applause of other passengers.

" People will forget what you said …. .. People will forget what you did …. .. but People will never forget how you made them feel."

If you are not comfortable to be seated with a male passenger, then travel with your own male companion as you are supposed to. You have chosen a country which is free of gender bias and if you still like to be treated as a second-class citizen, then go back to your country where you will receive such treatment on daily basis. Since you have chosen a Christian country over a Muslim country, for heaven’s sake please stop such drama and be a part of the society. When you are in Rome, be like a Roman.
Why does she or her husband think that she was “humiliated”? Do they know that she too humiliated the passenger who was sitting beside her, by asking for another seat?

Its true that the incident can cause the extreme distress and anxiety as a result of this experience. Yet see why this is happening, its because what is the religion blamed for. Some of the religious teaching and practice causes extreme anxiety to most.

There could be more to it, not just the seat issue. We will know only if heard both side of the story.

Once I visited Jumeriah Beach in Dubai with full pant and shirt... the security stopped me and told me it is beach for swimmers...You are only allowed with shorts or swimming dress. i.e. when you are at home dress or eat as you like and when you are travelling, visiting, migrating or going for job change according to the situation or don't do it.

To give a comment on this gentle and soft Thema is difficult.Airlines will have their own reasons for taking her out.still not only she but we too would feel bad.sometimes some People Play mischief and others have to pay for it.Did the passenger meant Switch off seat is a different seat?why did they not obey when she felt uncomfortable with next one?was also not good to immediately to pull out.Even aircraft too are feeling at present on fire, they too dont want risk .Hope this will not lead again for some discussions and further escalation.

Firstly they have to understand this US is not their native place. So abide by the rules and go back to where you have come from, were you can live with your whims and fancies.

These type of lady passengers think they are superior natured creatures or as if the Aircraft belongs to them.
Such attitude is not the first time. For them (may be from rich Arab countries)rest all are nuts or inferior ones. When travelling internationally accept the norms and regulations as per international aviation regulation.
For me it was well done.

"Abdulle's husband Abukar Fidaw said, "She was humiliated because of her religion and the way she dressed."
Next time let her travel by chartered flight.

I feel bad for the woman. However, she is not supposed to travel without a male companion. Now that she did forego this rule, whats wrong with sitting with a passenger next to her ? Did she have not brains while checking-in to ask for a seat that does not have a passenger of a gender she is not comfortable with ?

Nevertheless, her asking for change of seat may not be a reason nor her being hijab clad. There got to be something more that the airline is not revealing.

    Kadrimai,

Flight attendant enforcing 'Donald Trump law' before even he is elected...just kidding...

Possibly a miscommunication...perhaps woman could not explain her case properly...with her 'Burka' perhaps flight attendant was scared...

Now her lawyers will try to take a fat bite of compensation...

Every time Sharook Khan passes through any US airport...they do 'Strip Search' on him...perhaps his name is there in their 'Data Base' for some reasons...like making a phone call to Dawood or whatever similar...

Americans are good in 'Taping Phones' they were tapping German PM Angela Merkels phone for long time ...tapping Sharooks phone is not a big deal for them...

    Kallen moooooooooooooooo???

    @Lydia,
I would like to put my point with an example.
There are many girls who don’t wish to travel by bus during busy hours in the morning to avoid molestation by perverts who take the undue advantage of the rush.
Can you blame those girls that why don’t they use personal vehicles or suggest them to travel during non rush hours?. Of course they have their valid reason which compels them to use same bus. Its our duty as co passengers to extend our help by whatever means possible and not asking those girls to leave the bus if they find it uncomfortable.
