NEW DELHI, Oct 23: Amid reports of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh having felt let down by his allies backing out on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the BJP said on Tuesday the reality of a 'sad and helpless' leader is a cause for national worry.
In yet another personal attack on Singh, the saffron party said the nation needs an 'enthusiastic leader' who is decisive and not 'helpless'.
"The nation needs to reflect on a question 'can a sad man lead a resurgent nation'? Neither the prime minister nor his office is doing the nation a favour by projecting him as a helpless leader," senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said.
His remarks came a day after Singh reportedly told UPA allies that he felt let down by their U-turn on the nuclear deal.
Jaitley said the recent developments have thrown up several important questions in the minds of the people and alleged that the UPA government is 'paralysed by internal contradictions.'
"The reality thrown up about the sad and helpless prime minister is a cause for national worry. Can a sad and helpless prime minister lead India? India is a growing, youthful and resurgent nation. It needs an enthusiastic leader who can take decisions and implement them," Jaitley said.
BJP has been attacking Singh and has even dubbed him as the weakest ever prime minister the country has ever had.
Jaitley also ridiculed the Prime Minister's recent statements that non implementation of the nuclear deal will not be the end of life.
"The Prime Minister's speech at the Hindustan Times summit that one has to live with the disappointment but life must go on is a typical Indian condolence message. This speech displays the state of the Prime Minister's mind," the BJP leader said.
Jaitley alleged that the UPA government has not taken any significant decision in the recent months and dubbed reports about Prime Minister being embarrassed over the nuclear deal has been a 'pathetic spectacle'.
