Mangaluru, May 17: "Demanding a stop to the ongoing Yethinahole project, people of Dakshina Kannada will observe a district bandh on May 19. Educational institutions, hotels, bus associations, auto rickshaw associations, factories have already come forward voluntarily to extend their support towards the Dakshina Kannada bandh," said Vijay Kumar Shetty president of Nethravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti addressing a press meet on Tuesday May 17.

Speaking against the district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai, he said, "Why can he not understand the problems of the people of Dakshina Kannada? He knows the actual problem but he pretends otherwise, in order to save his chair."

"The district bandh will be a peaceful one. Ambulances, drug stores, milk supply vehicles, water supply
vehicles are allowed to operate," he added.

Speaking at the meet, M G Hegde slamming the district in-charge minister on water scarcity in the city, said, "Ramanath Rai should tour Mangaluru to see how hotels, hostels, hospitals are facing the water scarcity problem in the city. Ramanath Rai and U T Khader should convey to the chief minister that this project is not practical but detrimental to the people of Dakshina Kannada."

He cautioned that if the district administration tries to restrain the bandh, it will be responsible for future consequences.

Satyajit Surathkal, convener of the committee said, "Irrespective of caste and religion, people who partook of May 16 protest made it a success. People should voluntarily come forward in support of the bandh on May 19.

He further stated that the district in-charge minister should not politicise the Yethinahole issue. Nethravati is the lifeline of the district. Ramanath Rai has been held responsible because you have elected him to this position. D V Sadananda Gowda and Veerappa Moily are blamed because they were also elected to this position. Along with all the MLAs, you can move the adjournment motion in the assembly against this project? If this is done, then people will also support you. Contracts for various works of Yethinahole have been given to the contractors of the district. In order to halt the Yethinahole project this should be stopped.

Commenting on Ramanath Rai's statement that the chief minister had given time for the activists to meet him, but they did not do so claiming they had a feast, Vijayakumar Shetty said, "The activists were invited during Vijayadashami, but the activists had religious responsibilities. Hence the date was asked to be changed. This message was conveyed through Oscar Fernandes to the CM's office. The CM has to fix the time and date. We cannot do that. If the CM wants us to fix the date we are ready to do so. It is the secretary of the CM who should fix the date and time."

"The activists also left it to district in-charge, Ramanath Rai to take the initiative of fixing the date for the Yethinahole dialogue and to call for a meeting with all MLAs, MPs, former MLAs. We are ready to go to Bengaluru for the meeting."

Dinkar Shetty, Shashiraj Kolambe, Jithendra Kottary and others were present at the meet.

its not about who is calling for bandh or not . As a mangalorean we must support netravati movement.
Here some ppl are saying that its the water that goes to sea that is being sent to yettinahole is wrong. We know what happened to cauvery after we gave water to tamil nadu. People in karnataka only didnt have enough water. In the month of april itself mangalore didnot have enough water. then if yettinahole is started what would happen to us. I wish people should know what are the disadvantages of us if yettinahole project doen happen. I owe to people to find as to why people are against yettinahole and if convinced then everyone should participate irrespective of the party.

Only extra water flowing to the sea can be diverted instead of flooding and spoiling the valuable crop grown by hardworking Agriculturist.Thereby

We require a fire brand Leader, not cool as ice as Vijay Kumar Shetty. He is a good man, but he can not lead, as he got the seal of Congress, many wary to follow him. I feel it is a waste of time, when Rain bashes Mangalore, most of our people forget about the Water woes, least the Yettina Hole Project. Now let us concentrate on Water Harvesting and replenishing the dead Water bodies, like small Lakes, Wells and Bore wells. Also let us learn not to waste water unnecessarily, like washing cars daily, even few fools do it when people cry for a bucket of Water. Jai Hind

The Thumbe dam should have been built to a height of 30 feet or more. It would have stored more water. Instead it is built to a height of 13 feet.

Thumbe dam was constructed in the early 1970's. The population of Mangalore town was 2 lakhs then. Then a lot of neighbouring villages were amalgamated to make Mangalore a city. The water supply has been the same but the population increased. More buildings sprang up. There was no foresight. Building licences were issued to all and sundry without understanding the City's infrastructure. The drainage system which was laid in the 1960's were not replaced by larger pipes to cater to today's pressure. On top of the old narrow pipes concrete roads were constructed. That's the reason you will find manholes overflowing. Even today Kulshekar / Shaktinagar area's has no drainage facility.Yet building licences are given for apartments in these areas. Hence the promoter lets out the sewage into leach pits which in turn pollutes neighbouring old wells.

Town planning officers come from northern districts. They don't care about Mangalore. They move off in 2-3 years. They have no love for Mangalore.

Bhuvan, that's the best thing to do! If bundh was called after 4 days, people may have to go with umbrella and raincoat in order to protest there is no water!!! Big setback for protesters!! It will be a big favor if protesters force the concerned to give proper plan and demands so that we will not have such problem in the future. Protests are disturbance and grave inconvenience to fellow human being other than bundh activist!!!!

Come on Guys Wake up. Especially our MLA's and Ministers. Now that the Netravati has dried up, please make use of this time to dig deep in to this river so that more and more water can be saved for the next year. Make some sort of provision by dredging in to these dried up rivers so that the water can be preserved for next year. At least learn from this year's drought conditions and hardships people of these district are facing. the Yettinahole project in the interest of people.

Bandhs are unlawful. therefore, the proposed 'Dakshina Karnataka bandh on thursday may be called off. Likewise, the agitation for a separate 'Tulunadu' may also be dropped. we have to think of larger interest of Karnataka State.Hope peace and goodwill prevail over emotional feelings !

Who is he decide what will operate what will be bundh? Due to shortage of rain and bad plan on water conservation has resulted water shortage in the city! It has happened every few years and will keep happening under any government rule unless we start blocking part of water entering sea from the month of October. It is already hot and humid, rain is awaiting in the corner to shower in few days. Few people wants to disrupt normal day to day life of many! I wonder these days MP post is for only election. No one expects them to do any work nor expect them to be seen around!! This bundh is another total waste like ABVP type of time pass gathering!!

at least in the subject let's not bring politics. Good to see a team came forward to save our Nethravathi. shame on our MLAs and MPs for not speaking a word to stop this harmful project. this year we saw a worst hit draught at the district and it may be still deadly if this project is allowed to be uted. It's evident that the project work is ON irrespective of opposition by the district people. Our great Nidderamiah ( sorry to twist the name ) , he was so dare that he d in our own Mangalore airport that at any cost yethinahole project will not stop. he announced in our land... we could not do or say anything. . any ways, it's all district people to join together and make this bandh a grand success.
