Mangaluru, May 17: "Demanding a stop to the ongoing Yethinahole project, people of Dakshina Kannada will observe a district bandh on May 19. Educational institutions, hotels, bus associations, auto rickshaw associations, factories have already come forward voluntarily to extend their support towards the Dakshina Kannada bandh," said Vijay Kumar Shetty president of Nethravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti addressing a press meet on Tuesday May 17.
Speaking against the district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai, he said, "Why can he not understand the problems of the people of Dakshina Kannada? He knows the actual problem but he pretends otherwise, in order to save his chair."
"The district bandh will be a peaceful one. Ambulances, drug stores, milk supply vehicles, water supply
vehicles are allowed to operate," he added.
Speaking at the meet, M G Hegde slamming the district in-charge minister on water scarcity in the city, said, "Ramanath Rai should tour Mangaluru to see how hotels, hostels, hospitals are facing the water scarcity problem in the city. Ramanath Rai and U T Khader should convey to the chief minister that this project is not practical but detrimental to the people of Dakshina Kannada."
He cautioned that if the district administration tries to restrain the bandh, it will be responsible for future consequences.
Satyajit Surathkal, convener of the committee said, "Irrespective of caste and religion, people who partook of May 16 protest made it a success. People should voluntarily come forward in support of the bandh on May 19.
He further stated that the district in-charge minister should not politicise the Yethinahole issue. Nethravati is the lifeline of the district. Ramanath Rai has been held responsible because you have elected him to this position. D V Sadananda Gowda and Veerappa Moily are blamed because they were also elected to this position. Along with all the MLAs, you can move the adjournment motion in the assembly against this project? If this is done, then people will also support you. Contracts for various works of Yethinahole have been given to the contractors of the district. In order to halt the Yethinahole project this should be stopped.
Commenting on Ramanath Rai's statement that the chief minister had given time for the activists to meet him, but they did not do so claiming they had a feast, Vijayakumar Shetty said, "The activists were invited during Vijayadashami, but the activists had religious responsibilities. Hence the date was asked to be changed. This message was conveyed through Oscar Fernandes to the CM's office. The CM has to fix the time and date. We cannot do that. If the CM wants us to fix the date we are ready to do so. It is the secretary of the CM who should fix the date and time."
"The activists also left it to district in-charge, Ramanath Rai to take the initiative of fixing the date for the Yethinahole dialogue and to call for a meeting with all MLAs, MPs, former MLAs. We are ready to go to Bengaluru for the meeting."
Dinkar Shetty, Shashiraj Kolambe, Jithendra Kottary and others were present at the meet.
