Mumbai, May 22: Anurag Thakur became the youngest president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today. The 41-year-old was elected unanimously after Shashank Manohar vacated the office earlier this month.

The decision was taken at a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai today.

Thakur was elected secretary in the BCCI elections last year, when Jagmohan Dalmiya returned as president. After Dalmiya's death, Manohar came back for a second term as BCCI president but his decision to step down following the Lodha panel heat, paved the way for Thakur to take over.

Earlier, Thakur had formally garnered support from all six East Zone associations - Cricket Association of Bengal, National Cricket Club, Odisha Cricket Association, Tripura Cricket Association, Assam Cricket Association and Jharkhand Cricket Association.

Meanwhile, Thakur nominated Ajay Shirke as the secretary of the cricket board at the SGM today.

Manohar's exit from the top post on May 11 barely seven months into his tenure had necessitated the election of the new chief of the world's richest and most powerful cricket body.

Meanwhile, the BCCI president's job could get extremely tough from here on as he would need to implement Lodha Panel recommendations. Manohar had lashed out at the report saying he was opposed to some of the Lodha panel's suggestions to improve the state of affairs in Indian cricket board, including the one-state-one-association policy.
