Couple Held for Living in 'Disgusting' House

Suffield, Oct 29: Police arrested a husband and wife after finding them and their 9-year-old daughter living in an "absolutely disgusting" house, according to court documents.

Police responding to a medical call at the Bakes home earlier this month found piles of clothes covered in food and faeces, three feet of dirty dishes in the kitchen sink, a kitchen table covered with garbage and rotten food, and brown liquid running out of the refrigerator onto the floor, according to court documents.

They saw cockroaches and watched a rat run across the floor.

They also found a half-decorated Christmas tree and piles of what appeared to be hot dogs and chili on the floor.

It was extremely difficult for paramedics to reach Timothy Bakes, 38, because of the "excessive amount filth covering the entire house," officers wrote in an affidavit. He was taken to the hospital for an undisclosed medical problem.

A three-foot pile of clothing, pizza boxes and candy wrappers blocked the 9-year-old's bedroom door. She was taken into Department of Children and Families (DCF) custody and later released to her grandparents.

Nancy Bakes, 38, admitted the house was in horrible condition and asked officers not contact DCF, according to court documents.

Police said she told them she and her husband are having relationship problems and she only sleeps at the house at night, avoiding it during the day.

When they asked her why she didn't clean up after dog, she didn't answer.

The Bakes turned themselves in on Tuesday and were released on a promise to appear. They are due to return to Enfield Superior Court on November 13.

A message seeking comment was left at the Bakes' home. Court documents did not list an attorney for them.
