Chennai, Oct 29: Fifteen people, including four children, were killed in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu as heavy downpour triggered by north-east monsoon swept the State inundating several low-lying areas and destroying crop.
Seven persons, including four children, were killed in Kumbakonam district when a row of houses collapsed, police said.
One person was electrocuted in Chennai when he came in contact with a snapped live wire.
A 50-year-old woman was killed in floods in Cumbam in Theni district.
Reports of six other deaths came from various places across the state, police said.
The State government announced a holiday for educational institutions tomorrow when as Regional Met Department forecast isolated heavy rainfall across the state, Kerala, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh in the next 48 hours.
Most parts of Tamil Nadu received heavy rainfall with Thiruvidaimaruthur in Tanjavur district receiving 16cm, followed by Usilampatti (Madurai dt.) 12cm, Kumbakonam and Kudavasal (Tanjavur dt.) 11cm till Sunday noon.
According to Met officials, the low pressure over Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and has centered south-east of Chennai.
It was expected to move in a west, north-westerly direction and cross Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh between Puducherry and Kavali, near Nellore in AP, Monday evening.
