UAE protests US arrest, calls to avoid national dress abroad

Dubai, Jul 4 (AFP) : The United Arab Emirates summoned today a senior US diplomat to protest the "abusive treatment" of a UAE citizen as it advised citizens to avoid wearing national attire abroad.

The foreign ministry expressed "discontent" to US embassy deputy chief of mission Ethan Goldrich and demanded clarifications over the detention of an Emirati businessman suspected of being a jihadist.

The 41-year-old, visiting the United States for medical treatment, was wearing a white robe and Arab headdress Wednesday when he was arrested at a hotel in Cleveland, Ohio after an employee suspected he had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group, apparently in a phone call.

The foreign ministry said it expressed "discontent over the abusive treatment by the Ohio police of a UAE citizen" as well as the posting of a video showing his arrest, which contained "defamation of the UAE national."

"The UAE cares for the safety of its citizens and, therefore, demands clarifications about this incident," it said in a statement carried by WAM state news agency.
Goldrich "apologised" for the incident, pledging to get clarifications from authorities in the state of Ohio, WAM said.

A video of the incident, posted on Youtube, shows several policemen armed with rifles take down Ahmed al-Menhali, and then handcuff and search him.

"They were brutal with me. They pressed forcefully on my back. I had several injuries and bled from the forceful nature of their arrest," Menhali said, quoted in The National daily.

The Emirati foreign ministry, in a statement posted on Twitter, urged citizens "not to wear the national dress during their travel, especially in public areas, to ensure their own safety".

After confirming that Menhali posed no danger, the policemen let go of the Emirati man, who said he collapsed and needed treatment in hospital.

Menhali had been in the United States since April for treatment after a brain stroke suffered last year, said Emarat Al-Youm, another UAE daily.

Anti-Muslim incidents have spiked in the United States on the back of deadly IS attacks in the West that prompted presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.

Though it is a security matter, feel sad to note the ordeal UAE citizen had to undergo. Undoubtedly UAE rulers and citizens are wonderful people. The suggestion to avoid national dress abroad is a very good advise. God bless the world with peace and joy.

It is unfortunate that an UAE citizen who went to the states for medical treatment was treated in this deplorable fashion. Americans shoot first and enquire later. Attire of a person should not be a reason to suspect his behavior. Compared to many other Muslim countries, UAE is very tolerant. People from more than 200 countries peacefully co-exist here. They have been given freedom to wear their national dress and practice their religion without any state intervention. Permission to build temples and churches are also granted in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Church leaders praise UAE’s efforts to promote religious enlightenment. The UAE, thus, provides a great medium for people to explore and get acquainted with each other’s beliefs and living habits. Although, UAE is an Islamic country, people are not prevented from wearing the dress of their choice, even scantily dressed women are so freely roaming in the streets and the beaches.
UAE is also rated highly on gender equality. Law and order situation in UAE is impeccable. It is indeed a pleasure to live here where East and West so harmoniously mingle.

Due to the terror attacks around the world, the U.S. police force is acting too forceful by the high level order, and this misguided event was very sad and troubling to watch.

Based on a telephone call from an employee at the hotel giving the wrong and doubting information, the police reacted too hard. Even some airline passengers were questioned by the police while they were landed based on some bad report by another passenger in the flight.

The UAE has instructed the citizens to avoid wearing national dress while visiting foreign countries, that is the best solution to avoid such totally unfortunate events in the future.
Very sad and depressing event to watch.

    Unfortunate incident.
Its clear due to recent terrorism incident in the world all are worried & precautions. But to pounce on someone who is a innocent aged person.it also happened in case of an indian grand father on tour read in news couple of months ago. anyway you are arresting after a through check be polite & handcuff if necessary why jump around & break bones of old people. Who later turn to be innocents (in most cases). And hospitalized.

    Exactly Bro Ahmed,
If America wishes it alone can fight ISIS.But they 'll not,if they did then they will have to bear huge weapon business loss. Its Grand old story saying goes as far as their weapons are sold they are fit and healthy.
But its unfortunate that they are targeting these modest robes which was also once worn by many prophets including Jesus(PBUH).That's why u see even church father, jews Rabbis also wear the long robe. Its not a an arab dress. Its spiritual dress of ABRAHAM AND FAMILY(Jews, christians n muslims)
    Very bad America!!!

    arm, ksa,

India was more tolerant before bjp came to power??? may be tolerant for you but not to many people. I think you are really confused about what tolerance really is. Tolerance in not only about how people of different religious belief treat each other but how tolerant people are of each other and how much they tolerate others opinions as a whole. Is india as a whole tolerant of lower caste? no. is india tolerant of LGBT issues? No.

I believe it is false to say US is more racist. Is there a racial bias ? of course there may be but US as a whole is not racist. Remember that you are saying the blacks are oppressed when the president of US is black.

What US did is wrong, because the act has inflicted physical injury, which could have been very well avoided along with defamation that caused embarrassment to the victim.

Well Said..USA can't order others to avoid their National dress because of security problem..If one can carry bomb/pistol in Arab dress or Indian Dress, then one can carry Bombs in Pant too..!! At the most they can ask Muslim ladies not to cover their face fully..Sometimes US act like Kejri..

US cannot order to avoid wearing national attire but, It is a common sense to avoid it. US is a really big country. They do have a very tolerant society, but,not all will have a very similar pluralistic view. Anyone can wear anything if they want to, but in a country who are fearful of terrorist attack (blame it on media and stupid politicians who exaggerate dangers) would react differently. Even a slight suspicion will lead to people react and take steps to counter it.

What about kurtha pajama, a trend in new generations? Is it medieval?
What about the headgear of Sikhs?

There is something called traditions, which wise men preserve for next generations. You will not understand.
