At least 84 dead in 'terrorist' Nice truck attack

Nice (France), Jul 15 (AFP): A truck ploughed into a crowd in the French resort of Nice, killing at least 84 people today in what President Francois Hollande called a "terrorist" attack on revellers watching a Bastille Day fireworks display.

The driver was shot dead after barrelling the truck two kilometres through the festive crowd on the palm-lined Promenade des Anglais, sending hundreds fleeing in terror and leaving the area strewn with bodies.

Authorities said they found identity papers belonging to a 31-year-old French-Tunisian citizen in the truck, as well as "guns" and "larger weapons".

The attack was of an "undeniable terrorist nature," a sombre Hollande said in a televised national address, confirming that "several children" were among the dead as families came together to celebrate France's national day.

The bloodshed came on Bastille Day, a celebration of everything France holds dear, its secular republic and the values of "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite" (Freedom, Equality, Fraternity).

The attacker struck after a day of military pomp and ceremony in Paris -- where armed forces, tanks and fighter jets swooped down the Champs Elysees avenue -- and spectacular firework displays.

"France was struck on its national day ... the symbol of freedom," said Hollande. A photograph showed the front of the truck riddled with bullet holes and badly damaged, with burst tyres. A lone doll lay abandoned on the promenade where families celebrated the holiday just hours earlier.

Robert Holloway, an AFP reporter who witnessed the white truck driving at speed into the crowd, described scenes of "absolute chaos". "We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around. I had to protect my face from flying debris," he said.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told reporters on the scene that the death toll stood at 84, with scores injured including 18 in "critical condition". The attack is the third major strike against France in less than 18 months and prosecutors said anti-terrorist investigators would handle the probe.

It comes eight months after Islamic State attacks on Paris nightspots left 130 people dead, dealing a hard blow to tourism in one of the world's top destinations.

US President Barack Obama condemned "what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack", although no group had yet claimed responsibility. Hollande announced he would extend France's state of emergency for three months in the wake of this latest attack and "step up" the government's action against jihadists in Syria and Iraq.

He also called up army reservists to bolster the country's security services that are stretched to the limit.

    Dev, Guru, Satish & Arun.

First of all I heartily condemn such inhuman massacre. My deepest condolences and prayers to all those who got killed and injured and to their families.

Now let me ask you all a question. Do you all agree to a more violent massacre which is taking place in Middle East (Syria,Iraq,Libya,Tunisia,Palestine,Jordan to name a few) under the name of war by foreign troops who are poking their nose into others soil by their disturbing international policies by bombarding heavily with ultra sophasticated weapons on innocent civilians due to which many millions of men, women & children lost their lives. Millions lost their loved ones, their homes, their environment, their education, their festivals, their happiness, their childhood etc etc. And these foreign leaders and their people are enjoying in their countries. Do the world ever atleast cry or show any sympathy to those war torn countries people?

It's a human tendency that when he sees his own family is destroyed and shattered and has nothing, the he will retaliate by his own way.

One cannot escape & justify of Killing and destroy other countries in the name of military action.

If the world want peace and a permanent solution, they have to think in a more sensible way to such problems. If you suck others blood today, they will suck your blood one fine day. War is not a permanent solution.

You lied on Iraq and destroyed it with your malice & lies and see the outcome today.

Be honest and provide justice to all and stop poking nose on other countries internal affair. This will solve the problem permanently. Don't create internal rift in any country by your maliced, hidden motive policies. Such tactic one fine day will back bite themselves.

Let the peace, happiness and justice prevail in the world.

    Ahmed,
Why are you blaming others for your own faults and shortcomings?? American forces entered the region in 1990 after being invited by the Saudi and Kuwaiti govt following Iraq's occupation of Kuwait. The rest as they say is history. If western forces are in the Middle east then it's due to the Middle eastern gov't. No western man is interested to die in your barren deserts. The Syrian war too began with as a civil was between the Syrian army and rebels. Americans, Russia etc are involved after being invited by Iraqi and Syrian govt. Hence middle eastern gov't are responsible for the mess they are in. If someone interferes in your house affairs it's your fault for allowing him to interfere.

Hans, Western man is not interested to die in barren land but they are interested to loot the sources of barren land and to kill the people of barren land.

Agree in 1990 Kuwait requested US to assist for war with Iraq (Gulf war 1). But what about 2nd Gulf war? Who asked them to invade?

Regarding Policy of Syria. It was an internal matter as citizens were not happy with the Govt. Instead of supporting citizens you helped the ruthless Govt & rulers for materialistic gain upon the leaders call.

A countries rulers r leaders role is to look after its citizen not to torture them or suppress them.

Western guys create rift with their policies in other's land, try to sell their weapons by creating a war situation, experiment their weapons on others land & people, loot & control their oil & resources. Can't they not solve the crisis by other means apart from only military actions?? They can but they don't want to.... World is aware of their tactics, to divide them and to make them kill each other... These big brain Middle East guys don't try to realise what is what.

Be informed that violence is not the answer for violence. If you are careful and good how others will interfere in your affairs, Who given permission to Americans and others to take advantage, It is simple war and war may be Iran Iraq war, Kuwait war, or sectarian war in Syria and the like. There is something wrong somewhere. All should do introspection and strive for peaceful world.
