Mangalore, Nov 19: A Free Knee Check-up (Knee Replacement and Arthroscopy) camp will be conducted by A J Hospital and Research Center, Dr Sudarshan Bhandary, an orthopedic surgeon, informed media persons at the press conference here on Monday November 19.
Arthroscopy is a procedure used by orthopedic surgeons to diagnose and treat knee problems. Knee replacement surgery is usually undertaken when knee problems associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis have resulted in the wearing down of the knee joint. The camp will be held from Monday December 3 to Saturday December 8, at the premises of A J Hospital here. The team will be led by Dr Sudarshan Bhandary, Shiva Prasad Shetty, marketing consultant, A J Hospital, informed.
The camp's primary aim is to detect and treat some of the common ailments and injuries of the knee joint, viz. arthritis and ligament injuries. Knee replacement could only be the remedy when the knee related complications reach advanced stage, the surgeon explained.
The camp's serious consideration is poor people and economically backward sections of the society. Consultation, X- rays and arthroscopy will be offered free to the camp participants and MRI, knee replacement, ACL reconstruction and other knee related surgeries will be done at highly subsidized rate, Dr Sudarshan Bhandary informed.
Keeping the poor patients' interest in mind, the cost of knee replacement surgery has been fixed at Rs 85,000, against the usual cost Rs 1.25 lac. The highly focused targets are sports personalities and senior citizens who are more prone to the complications related to arthritis and ligament injuries, he added.
