Maneka Gandhi extends support to single moms, wants passports without father’s name

New Delhi, Jul 18 (Agencies) : Extending her support to single mothers of India, union women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi has requested foreign minister Sushma Swaraj to amend the existing passport rules that make listing of father's name a mandatory requirement.

Maneka has made the request after Priyanka Gupta, a single mother from Delhi, started a petition for the same on change.org.

Seeking the change in passport rules, Priyanka Gupta , in her petition, disclosed how the passport office reportedly insisted on having her husband's name in her daughter's passport, despite the fact that the husband had abandoned them.

"The judiciary has given progressive judgements that say that the father's name is not required. We tried to convince the passport officer, wrote letters, met senior officers but our request was denied. In the end we were forced to include his name. Every time my daughter looks at her Passport, she sees the name of a person who hurt her, who abandoned her, " Priyanka Gupta said in her petition.

Coming forward in support of the demand for change in passport rules, Maneka Gandhi , in a series of tweets, said on Friday, " Have received petitions where mother and child have insisted that name of the father should not be mentioned in passport. The petitions involved cases in which the father had abandoned the mother and the court had granted custody of the child to the mother. The current guidelines for passports warrant the name of the father as a mandatory requirement. The Delhi High Court in May 2016 stated that it was not essential to mention the name of the father if the mother and child so desired."

"Statistics reveal that number of single parents in the country is increasing both by way of conscious decision and by breakdown of marriages. I have requested external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj to look into the matter and get necessary modifications in the rules of assurance of passports," she added.

If the mother has the full custody rights of the child, then the unwanted requirement of having the name of the father in applying for a passport is quite a confusing demand.

This is a western culture and slowly spreading to our country too which may have to be treated suitably as per law.

In such issues, that is not the blind adoption of the western culture but simply to make life less burdensome.

Some of the friends who were dreaming to have a great retirement fun in India told me the delays and red tape to attain documents, the same process in the U.S. will take only one hour but in India it will be visiting three offices and one dozen unfriendly faces. Many of my friends are trying to dispose their properties and returning to the U.S. for ever.

Passports should follow the line of international acceptance. There is no point of having a passport which is rejected by every embassy on visa application!

There are good number of countries where name of the applicant or holder only is mentioned in the passport. Only a few countries like India mention names of both parents as well as spouse (if the holder is married). Many countries’ passports indicate the holder’s profession while it is not mentioned Indian passports. So it shouldn’t be mandatory to mentioned parents’ or spouse’s name in the passport. Name of either parent could be made acceptable for identification purposes.

    stan,

You are making a statement based on your moral values. You cant impose them over others. Am i against child growing up without a father? yes. But i cant impose what i think is right and wrong on others. Because i have to respect others individual rights.

And i always hate when some people think the western culture ruins everything? does it? If you hate western culture ... please go ahead and dislike Democracy, Freedom of speech and expression, clothing, their language, surely i think you must be celebrating christmas every year.. that also comes from west.

Case of too many liberated women..

There are many legal implications of having the father's name to a child that may far outweigh the emotional aspects.

You can be a single mom or a single dad but the biological process to bring forth a child into the world needs a man (father) and a woman (mother).

There are Single Moms, Single Dads, Transgenders, etc., etc., whose demands for acceptance of their woes will only turn this world upside down.

    A good example:
Nowadays a man can be a Mother and a woman a Father, what if tomorrow the transgenders come up with the request to Maneka to include such in the passport?

    Antonio DSilva,

There cannot be single dads. How is it possible?

Your example does not make sense. How can a man be mother? and a women be a father?
