Haveri, Jul 23: In connection with an incident in which atrocities were committed by police at Badasangapura in Hirekerur taluk on a rural youth, four constables of Rattihalli police station stand suspended.

The suspended constables are Basavaraj Malladad, Paramesh Yalavadahalli, Ramesh Bammannavar and Jilani Badesabanvar. They had indiscriminately assaulted Shankrappa Talwar, a youngster, who had visited his paddy fields late night on July 18 for watering them. The youth, who had suffered critical injuries had got admitted into the government hospital at Ranebennur. He is now under the medical supervision of a physician from Davanagere.

Haveri district superintendent of police, B Ramesh, said that in case policemen come across suspicious characters, they should be brought to the police station and questioned. Such people cannot be attacked just because their appearance evokes suspicion. The constables involved had not worn their uniforms and without informing the police sub-inspector, had gone out on patrol duty at night and inhumanly assaulted Shankrappa.

Ranebennur deputy superintendent of police, Anil Kumar Bhoomareddy, has been appointed as the investigating officer in the case. In his preliminary report submitted to the superintendent of police, Bhoomareddy prima facie found the constables guilty of torturing the youth concerned without informing or getting instructions from higher officers.
