Bhatkal, Aug 6: Coastal guard commander Mukesh Sharma who arrived in Bhatkal from Karvar on Friday, August 5, lauded the efforts of fishermen who swam for eight hours and later rescued by a boat. He also encouraged their families in Mavinakurve gram panchayat limits by visiting them.

He later went to the residence of late Manjunath Kharvi who had drowned in sea and paid his condolence to his family members.

He visited the government hospital where five fishermen were getting treated and obtained information about the incident.

Speaking about the incident which happened in the Arabian Sea on Wednesday evening, he said the efforts of fishermen who came back alive after swimming for several hours is praiseworthy. “The fishermen should be made aware that one life jacket can help save three to four lives in water. Other facilities also are available for safety in the sea,” he said.

“Three boats and a helicopter are put to service for the last 36 hours to search the person who was washed away in water. The operation will continue day in and day out under the guidance of DIG Suresh. There are rumours that a dead body is floating at Shirooru sea shore but it is yet to be confirmed,” he added.

Bhatkal ASP Dr Anoop Shetty, Tahsildar V N Badkar, CPI Suresh Nayak and others were present. 

Zilla panchayat president Jayashree Mogera, fishermen leaders Vasanth Kharvi, N D Kharvi, Govinda Kharvi, Ramadas Kharvi and others were also present.
