US Muslim woman fired from work for wearing hijab

Washinton, Aug 8 (IANS) : A muslim woman in the US was fired from her new job at a dental clinic for wearing a hijab to work.

Najaf Khan was hired as a dental assistant at Fair Oaks Dental Care in Fairfax County last week. She did not wear the hijab at her interview or on the first two days of employment.

"I was really upset. The day that it happened, I was devastated," NBC Washington quoted Khan as saying.

On her third day, she chose to wear the hijab as she felt that she would stay at the job and wearing it was part of her spiritual journey.

According to NBC Washington, Khan said that Dr. Chuck Joo, the owner of Fair Oaks Dental Care, told her to take off the hijab and gave her an ultimatum: she could continue wearing the scarf and be fired or work without it.

"When I said that I would not compromise my religion for that, he held the door open for me and I walked out," Khan added.

Joo told the media that pen displays of religion were not allowed at his business because he wants to keep it "neutral". If his employees want to wear a hat, it must be a surgical hat for sanitary reasons, Joo added.

The Council on American Islamic Relations responded to Khan's termination and said, "No employee should face termination because of his or her faith or religious practices. We call on Fair Oaks Dental Care to reinstate the Muslim employee and to offer her reasonable religious accommodation as mandated by law."

Khan said she would likely refuse an offer to return to the dental office as she would not want to work with someone "so close-minded".

..it may be the simple drama by the women to get compensation..it happened a quite some time..But US is champion of human rights, religious freedom & toleranace..now a days they guide us on tolerance and they are very concerned about growing intoleranec in India..they publish yearly report of religious intolerance, always they stood last, i mean they are first in religious tolerance..

A businessman builds a business to gain more customers. And to generate more profit.

By employing people who may chase away the customers through their behaviour, the businessman can lose big time.

Some employees do not necessarily have bad behaviour. But their strong desire to demonstrate their religion to the employer's customers can have a negative effect on the business.

So, ideally an employee must demonstrate at the interview what they plan to do during the employment. An interview should be "What you see is what you (will) get".

We have heard of several cases where the hijab does not appear at the interviews, but within a week of getting the employment, the person remembers the religion.

It is tough being an employer these days!

The latest data show that just 40 percent of Americans have finished an associate's degree or above, while an additional 22 percent attended some college but failed to graduate. Among children born into low-income families in the early 1980s, under 10 percent had earned a four-year degree by age 25.....does that qualify as "Highly Educated"?

    Dear Terence D Souza, Mangalore,
22 percent attended some college but failed to graduate is more than enough than copying live in the exams with the help of parents and friends and buying graduation certificates in India in the Northern Indian States.

If she was not a hypocrite she would have worn it during interview. Not after getting the job. It's like that camel story, put your head inside the tent first and then slowly bring rest of your body.
Not singing national national anthem as it's against religion, problem accepting Bharatha Bhaagya Vidhaatha after taking all the bhaagyas from govt....all these things happen only in intolerant India. Not tolerant USA wher you can get kicked out of aeroplane just because you look suspicious to a co passenger.
