Udupi, Aug 8: Niranjan Bhat, one of the accused in the murder case of businessman Bhaskar Shetty, has been arrested and on Monday August 8, was taken to Nandalike in Belman, Karkala under tight security for identification of the crime scene, sources said.
Though police are yet to confirm the arrest officially, it is learnt that Bhat was taken to Nandalike by jeep, but as hundreds of curious locals gathered, he was masked and made to remain in the vehicle while the police inspected different spots related to the crime, sources said.
The operation was jointly conducted by Udupi town, Manipal and Karkala police teams. The police also took Bhat to Kalkar river at Palli, into which sacks containing Bhaskar's ashes and other materials used in the crime were thrown. However, the police found no sacks except sand bags.
In the evening, forensic experts from Mangaluru inspected Bhat's house, the 'homa kunda' and the banks of the river.
The police have reportedly found that the accused employed 20 litres of petrol, camphor and ghee to burn Bhaskar's body and the process went on from about 8 pm on July 28 until about 1 am, till the body had completely turned to ashes. Two other persons, one of them who has also been reportedly arrested, helped Niranjan fill the sacks, sources said.
Also, the police are understood to have inspected the Verna vehicle used to transport the body from Bhaskar's house in Indrali, where the murder took place, to Nandalike.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that Niranjan's father Srinivas may be booked for destruction of evidence.
Niranjan and the helper are likely to be produced in court on Tuesday August 9, sources said.

Though police have not confirmed the arrest, reliable sources said that Bhat was arrested late night on Sunday August 7 and is being brought to Udupi.
It is learnt that the police had earlier questioned Bhat's car driver, who is said to have revealed that Bhat was absconding in Dharwad. Though police sources have maintained that he might have fled to Bidar, it is reliably learnt that he has been nabbed in Dharwad on the basis of information provided by his driver.
The 26-year-old Niranjan Bhat is known to have a taste for luxury which allegedly led him to conspire against Bhaskar Shetty, with whose wife he reportedly had a close relationship. Sources said that Shetty's wife Rajeshwari even gifted Bhat a flat and a car, in order to lure him into allegedly helping her get rid of her husband.
Meanwhile, Rajeshwari and her son Navaneeth, who is also accused in the murder of Bhaskar Shetty, were on Monday August 8 produced in the CJAM court here.
The court remanded both the accused in judicial custody till August 12.
