Mangaluru, Aug 11: The city crime branch (CCB) police led by inspector Sunil Y Nayak has succeeded in arresting an accused in connection to a major robbery that took place in Mumbai last month and has recovered ruby and other valuable stones worth a whopping Rs 5 crore.
A Mumbai-based businessman was kidnapped in July and robbed of a pendent made of a ruby, diamonds and gold. The CCB police have managed to recover the pendent from the accused.
The arrested accused has been identified as K S Yunus (42), a resident of Bikarnakatte here.
The CCB received information that on August 10, another accused named Talat and Yunus would be meeting in an Alto car near an under-construction building in Bikarnakatte with the purpose of selling off the valuable pendent illegally. Based on this information, the CCB police raided the spot and arrested Yunus and took the pendent as well as the Alto car into their possession. Talat however managed to escape.
Yunus, Talat Bajal and their accomplices Likhit Gopal Shetty, Naseer Ahmed Khan of Mumbai, Fakir Mohammed alias Shameer Sheikh, Gautam Anant Kadam, Prateek Alok Moyithi, and Shameer alias Hasan Khan had kidnapped the businessman in Mumbai and robbed him of the ruby pendent. They were planning to sell the ruby in Hassan.
The Mumbai police who took up the case exchanged information with the Mangaluru police in July. The case was registered in Bandra Kurla Complex police station.
In the international market, the ruby seized is approximately worth Rs 5 crore, said the police.
Among the accused, Talat is an accused in several cases.
The seized ruby and diamond-studded gold pendent along with the Alto car and a mobile phone have been handed over to Mangaluru east police.
