Udupi, Aug 15: A lensman had a narrow escape after his car burst into flames on the flyover at Kaup here on Monday August 15.

Dinesh Gode, proprietor of Kundapur-based Gode Video Centre, was driving along the national highway 66 when he noticed smoke emanating from the engine of his Wagon R. He immediately got out and within minutes, the car was completely burnt right before his eyes.

Dinesh was returning after a photography assignment at a programme in Mundkur when the incident took place.

Luckily, Dinesh was also able to retrieve his camera, LCD projector, LCD TV and other items which were in the car just before it burst into flames.

Scores of people gathered at the spot and watched the car burning. As a result, traffic on the highway was affected for sometime.

The police who rushed to the spot called the fire brigade, but by the time the fire fighters arrived, the car had completely turned to ashes. They were however successful in preventing the flames from touching the gas cylinder in the car.

Kaup circle inspector A S Halamurthy Rao, Kaup SI Jagadish Reddy and other police personnel visited the spot.

A case has been registered in Kaup police station.

It is time CNG is introduced instead of LPG which might prevent these hazards.
Auto shut off valves as safety measures in the gas based tanks would also be able to prevent gas leakage & these mishaps.

Second life ! God Bless him.
On serious note there is no set rule in India that the vehicle should carry an fire extinguisher, in other countries the vehicle has to be proved its road worthy every year if not your are not let to drive, there is an annual test for the breaks and the expiry of the extinguisher as well out of all the other test.. sorry to say but good luck with the car maker or the insurance covering your loss... its life in the Incredible India. At least he was able to get out of the car without the malfunction of the seat belt and if he was wearing one .. and we all know how careless drivers are in India.. AT least let this be a lesson to the law makers to pass some new safety laws rather than.. for the safety of the COWS.
