Mangalore, Dec 4: Education today is only restricted to the rich segments of society. However, one must remember that opening a school only for the rich strata of society,  is nothing but committing a sin. Therefore, it is essential especially for the Catholic Board of Education (CBE) to concentrate on the poor segments of society, and this should be the basic motto of educational institutions, elucidated M Veerappa Moily, chairman of the Union Administrative Reforms Commission.

Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the CBE held at Milagres Pre-University College premises on Tuesday, December 4, he pointed out that if the two districts of coastal Karnataka namely DK and Udupi today stands out as unique districts in the country, it is precisely due to the contribution of CBE. "No doubt, these two districts is blessed by CBE", he declared lauding the CBE.

In the course of his speech he recollected that according to a  survey conducted in the State about 16 years ago, when he was the state education minister, around 60 % of the children suffered from learning disabilities. If teachers can break these clouds in the education horizon, these children will soon turn into model citizens, he opined. Therefore in this context he advised that the CBE should take the initiative to solve this problem in the days to come. In fact he poignantly urged "The lamp of the educational drive should be lit-up in each house of this coastal area". It is with this end in view that CBE should continue its pioneering work of sowing good seeds, Moily exhorted.

Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu the vice-president of CBE, in his introductory remarks informed "CBE is running a total of 360 institutions in Mangalore Diocese". "And this institution is one of the largest educational institutions in the state", he added.

Also on the occasion the former vice-presidents' of CBE Msgr Alexander D’Souza, Msgr Aloysius D’Souza and Msgr Fred V Pereira were felicitated by Veerappa Moily. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza the bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore and president of CBE presided over the function.

CBE is doing a yeoman's job in terms of providing literacy to our society in Mangaluru. However, I tend to agree with Mr. Moily that education must be universal. We have seen the rich and well to do generally can afford the education, the poor and destitute have been neglected most of the times.

Providing universal education is not only the responsibility of CBE but also the primary responsibility of the state. CBE must do all it can to cater the poor with the help of the government both state and national. This is the only way universality (commonality, affordability and reachiability) of the education can be maintained.
