Mangalore: Train to Bangalore - Has Bus Lobby Poked its Nose again?

Mangalore: Train to Bangalore - Has Bus Lobby Poked its Nose again?

Mangalore, Dec 6: A long struggle for resuming Mangalore -Bangalore passenger train services has become fruitful at last in the coastal area. Moreover, this struggle was massive and non-political. Finally, the passenger trains will run between the state capital and the harbour city. However, there lie further hurdles for the success of this passenger train service.

The railway authorities have introduced two passenger trains between Bangalore and Mangalore in the initial stage. Both these trains will leave from their destinations at the same time. But, the time which these trains would take to reach is a question of worry now.

The Volvo buses which ply between Mangalore and Bangalore on NH 48 were taking hardly five and a half to six hous between the two destinations, when the Shiradi Ghat was in motorable condition. Now, they take one or two hours more owing to diversions and switch-over to longer routes on state highways. But, the train which would run between Mangalore and Bangalore from Saturday December 8, will be taking more than 11 hours to reach its destination. This has given to the age-old belief that the ever-active lobby of bus owners has worked in fixing the schedule of these trains.

Moreover, the train does not travel directly between Mangalore and Bangalore. Instead, it would travel through Mysore and Mandya. Hence, the passengers who travel in this train would have to travel about 120 kilometers extra in order to reach Mangalore or Bangalore. The railway route between Mangalore–Sakleshpur-Shravanabelagola and Bangalore is the shortest route which would take about 5 to 6 hours for an express train. Moreover, there lies good number of passengers between these two destinations. All those Mangaloreans working in IT majors and BPOs in the state capital were glad that a comfortable journey would be possible after the introduction of passenger train between their home town and Bangalore. However, the long duration of journey is a matter of worry for them.

Meanwhile, the railway department has introduced passenger train only during the night. Hence, one has no scope to view the nature's bounty which lies between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya. It would be a big loss for the passengers who love to watch the beauty of mother nature. Hence a train service during day time is the need of the hour and the duration of journey should be short.

Successful struggle:

The hunger strike started by P V Mohan, convener of Mangalore Railway Fighters’ Federation has been successful, in introducing the train services between Mangalore and Bangalore. All the local social welfare and voluntary organizations, political parties have supported this strike. Accordingly, this strike reaped benefits within short duration.

If the political parties and organizations would join together for these genuine issues, the coastal area can successfully come out of communal violence. The people will definitely forget communal issues and come together for these genuine issues.

The railway department had fixed many dates for the inaugural of passenger train and cheated the citizens many times. This time too, no one believed when the railway authorities stated that the train services will be inaugurated on Saturday, December 8. Since reservations are already begun at city railway station for Mangalore - Bangalore passenger train. Hence, one can surely say that the passenger train would run between the state capital and port town from December 8 onwards.

While the Bus lobby'ts are well known, what is unknown (or rather, hushed up) is the active lobbying done by mining bosses, knowing quite well that a passenger train will lead to a cut in the goods sector (used extensively by mining companies) due to the nature of the terrain. No wonder particular politician and co. did their best to scuttle it - after all, these people are the lifeline of his party. Kudos to Mr. PV Mohan for forcing these politicians to bow before the public. Looks like our district would have developed much faster without our politicians.

The crooked politicians who on stage for this occasion (the only politician missing was Jameel Ahmed the Bus operators king and Deve Gowda led Janata Dal-S fixer) in the Mangalore station speaks volumes of the sate of politics in South Kanara and our country in general.

The whole tragedy is perhaps heightened by the fact that the Railways minister flew down in a special VVIP IAF aircraft all the way from New Delhi just to cut a ribbon and then flew back late night via Tirupati after a visit to the temple, all at helpless Indian tax payers expense! Surely Lord Balaji would have blessed him with health and more wealth if he has prayed at home for the upliftment of the poor.

First, It is un under statement to say it took 5.5 to 6 hours in BLR-MLR Volvo. I use to travel frequently and it would take nothing less than 7 to 7:30 hours to reach. Moreover, the timings of the train are just perfect given the fact that more people travel at night.... and it makes perfect sense now as people from Mysore and Mandya can use this service too. The statement that MLR-ARSIKERE-BLR train would take 6 hours makes me feel that the writer is someone who has no clear idea about How are things on the Ghats. The Approved speed limit on the Ghats for Passenger trains is 30 to 40 KM per hour. So its no way possible to reach BLR in 6 hours. It may take minimum of 8 hours to reach.

However, The reason why trains maynot be routed through Arsikere is the fact that its a busy route now. The Railways needs to plan well before introducing any new service on that route. Blame it on India's Poor Infrastructure. I am Glad that the Trains are back. It depends on us as to how successful we can make it. I am hopeful That Trains will do as much damage to the BUS LOBBy as much as Matsyagandha express to MUM did.

It’s good news. However Railway department consider both service express and slow train via other cities, so that we can target all segment of people who contribute our economy. of course express train is very important since mangalore-bangaore link is so important for many people on daily basis. Doesn’t matter about the price... people ready to afford even railway board increase the price..

All we need good service and save time and work hard... if our railway officers visit London once they will understand and relies how speed train will impact on economy and life of common man in living country I think it's better all bogy should have A/C specially for Indian weather..Let people enjoyed while travailing.... India is changing now and people ready to spend for any normal ticket where they confirmable

The train does not travel directly between Mangalore and Bangalore..through Hassan. Can any one investigate in detail the technical reasons? Who else can do it except our favorite Daijiworld.

While one feels happy that the train service is commencing there are many reasons to fret about. One would be the time taken to travel. I for one would suggest that the train leave from Mysore and proceed to Managalore via Bangalore. The train route can be further extended upto Cannanore as there are no trains from Bangalore to Cannanore on daily basis. The passesengers travelling from Bangalore to Cannanore by Bus is almost equal to that of Bangalore Mangalore. This would ensure that the train does not run empty and would be one of the highest revenue earning routes.

Good article with genuine issues. Bus lobby really played a vital role in fixing the route as well as the timings. Voices should be raised for a express train between Mangalore–Sakleshpur-Shravanabelagola and Bangalore. Anyway, after a strong struggle, the coastal people could find a train moving on the tracks..

It is very unfortunate that the timings of the train are not convenient for the passengers. The people should come together to protest and make a convenient timetable.

Thanks for the very informative article. I am sure this will create more powerful public outcry against our inactive MPs and MLA who are supposed to do their jobs( just do their not perform miracles). Christian community as a whole should send some MEMOs to leaders like Oscar Fernades and ask him to tackle the issue effectively. 1. More trains from Mangalore - Hassan routes 2 . Day time trains as well as night trains. 3. Put a cap on private buses . Only Govt Buses should run.

Bus journey minimum 8 hrs.normal times, 10 hrs. due to bad Shiradi ghat road. Train via Arsikere in MG took 10 hrs.previously, now also the Train timings given thro' Arsikere is 10 hrs.

Obviously starting train for the present is via Mysore taking 12 hrs. Considering terrain between Subramanya Road and Sakleshpur, faster than these hrs. may not be practicable in future also.

Thank god.at last the train is back on rails after 15 years. Its the power of unity among the people of the region made this happen.but as you said the bus lobby has again played their ball. the route and the train time is rediculous. also the fare is unjustified. compare the fare with the other routes, its much higher. Please stop taking Mangaloreans for granted.
