Brazil's Temer says impeachment 'natural' in democracy

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 26 (IANS): Brazil's interim President Michel Temer has said that impeachment was a natural part of democracy.

Temer, who attended a ceremony to receive the Paralympic flame, was asked whether he was nervous about the result of the impeachment process against President Dilma Rousseff.

"Impeachment is a natural thing in democracy," Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying.

Rousseff, who is charged with spending without congressional approval and manipulating government accounts, was suspended in May and Vice President Temer took over office.

The impeachment trial against Rousseff began on Thursday. If found guilty, Rousseff will be removed from the office while Temer will be confirmed as the new leader for the rest of her four-year term through 2018.
