Singapore's Deputy PM calls on Modi


New Delhi, Aug 26 (IANS): Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday here.

Shanmugaratnam briefed Modi on the status of various bilateral cooperation initiatives, especially in the areas of skill development and smart cities, an official release said.

Modi recalled his visit to Singapore last November, during which bilateral relations were upgraded to a "strategic partnership".

Modi said he was keenly looking forward to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong''s visit to India in the near future.

Modi also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the people of Singapore on the demise of former President S.R. Nathan.

Singapore has lost one of its great sons, the Prime Minister said.
