Mangaluru, Aug 27: Manjanady Kalkatta resident Mohammed Arif (29) kidnapped two weeks ago has been let out by the kidnappers at Sullia bus stand after giving him bus fare to his house, as per information received by Konaje police station.
Arif who was abroad had returned to his home town a few months ago and started business in fish near Chembugudde. When he was on his way to the port to bring fish in the wee hours on August 11, a group that came in Scorpio vehicle kidnapped him from Manjanady Kalkatta.
The kidnappers in a call made from a foreign telephone number demanded a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore from the family of Arif for his release. They also threatened to kill Arif if the amount was not paid. The kidnappers did not budge even after the family, who were afraid, offered to pay Rs 25 lacs. Therefore the family lodged a complaint at Konaje police station later. The police came to know that Lathif from Uppinangadi and Faruque group from Kerala had kidnapped Arif. Though Police spread a net to nab the suspects, they could not find them.
Kidnap for repayment of loan ?
When Arif was abroad, he had borrowed Rs 40 lacs on personal assurance. He had returned home without repaying it. It is possible that the kidnap was to claim that money. Though Arif said that he was taken to Tamilnadu and kept blindfolded, he has not given any other information as he was in a state of shock.
