Udupi, Aug 27: Two-day Karavali Shettigar Conference-2016 was inaugurated by Padma shri Dr D Veerendra Heggade at Ammanni Ramanna Shetty Hall here on Saturday August 27. The conference was organized by Dakshina Kannada zilla Padmashali Mahasabha, Mangaluru.
In his inaugural address, Dr Heggade said, “Government should give first priority to food, clothing and shelter for poor people. Mechanization has affected all small and large scale industries. We need to turn from liberalization, privatization, globalization and modernization to humanization. Now-a-days everything has become commercial. Fashion is faith for people. Cut-throat competition has started after privatization.”
“We need to foster mutual love and confidence in humans to bridge gaps. Mutual love develops a good society and helps in integrated development of a nation. People are changing but not society, so people of society have to improve themselves first.Sometimes, we expect an absurd cooperation from the government. Expecting from the Government all the time is waste. Expecting government to do something for us can makes us hopeless sometimes. We live in fantasy and expect government to provide facilities for a better life.” he added.
“Manual work has not changed even after we have advanced in technology. This is a sad thing that most of the skilled persons are addicted to alcohol and other vices. Only certain demands have to be presented to government so that these demands are fulfilled for the betterment of community. Youth need to be organized and bring all deprived communities into the mainstream of society,” said Heggade.
Speaking on the occasion, Udupi-Chikkamagluru MP Shobha Karandlaje said, “There is no caste for education. People should contribute something for society only then we can see development. Gram system of India was destroyed during British rule and the citizen of country became dependent on others.Khadi use has increased to 103% in just three months. People have been inspired by Prime Minister Modi. Development is not possible only through public speech. We have to create opportunities for youth to achieve that.”
Purandar D Shettigar, Kinnigoli , president DK zilla Padmashali Mahasabha said, “There are 16 temples in three districts namely Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kasargod. The community should get governmental schemes for all round development.”
During the conference, people urged the government to include ‘Shettigar’ as caste in its caste list and provide all governmental benefits like other castes.
