Feeling proud over Mother Teresa's canonisation: Modi

New Delhi, Aug 28 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tributes to Mother Teresa, saying every Indian must feel proud as she has officially been recognised as a saint.

Modi said that despite being not an Indian, Mother Teresa dedicated her whole life serving the Indians.

"Mother Teresa devoted her whole life serving the poor and destitute people in India. When such a person is conferred with sainthood, it is natural for Indians to feel proud," Modi said in his "Mann Ki Baat" radio address.

He noted that Mother Teresa was an Albanian and English was not her mother tongue.

"Mother Teresa is going to be canonised on September 4. We are sending an official delegation led by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to represent 1.25 crore Indians at the ceremony," Modi said.

Mother Teresa, who arrived in Kolkata on January 6, 1929, won numerous honours, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

On October 19, 2003, she was beatified as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta".

A second miracle was credited to her intercession by Pope Francis in December last year, paving way for her to be recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

Her canonisation is scheduled for September 4, a day before her 19th death anniversary.

I can still remember Mohan Bhagath mouthing off this unselfish and honourable nun who dedicated her whole life to the poor destitutes and sick. Bhagat his nothing compared to her.She had world leaders at her feet. Bhagath reminds of the story of frog in the well. Once he realised majority of Indians did not support his statement, he put his tail inside and shut his mouth.

Mother Teresa, through her selfless service, demonstrated her utmost love for Jesus Christ by adhering to one of His teachings, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” St. John 13:35

A saint does what God commands them to do.

It is best we don't mix something that is so sweetly incomparable in India's modern history, with the bitter by discussing the motives of politicians.

After reading a recent article in The Hindu titled 'The Paranoid art of BJP's Nationalism', I am now convinced than ever before that this government is divided into two faces!. One of Modi and other Amit Shah!. All the non sense things happening in the country have the official seal!. Modi shows the softer face and deliberately condemns things like cow vigilantism, religious intolerance, or like the above article talking good about other religions!. But this is only a show as head of government!. On the other hand and quietly Modi has given his full aporoval to Amit Shah to carry out all wrong things in the country without directly getting involved!. That's why even though Modi condemns these wrong things openly, he has not taken any steps nor shown any interest in controlling these outfits!. So today if someone vsays that why Modi should be blamed for all things happening in the country, I will ask! Why not!?. So people should be careful about BJP's designs and consign them to history books at the earliest just like the people of Gujarat, Punjab, Goa etc have decided!!!. Else the unrest will continue and all have to pay a dear price!

Disagree whole heartedly with your analysis and comment. I took time to read all comments and no one is questioning praise by Modi, many who opined noted that will there will be problem for Modi due to this praise of Mother Theresa.

People are hurt due to words and actions against them or their faith or those who they believed as part of their faith in last several years.

There is lot of hurt feelings and many have not been able to express what is in their heart and mind in last few years.

Yes, we fully appreciate what Modi has said and only time will tell whether he meant it or was just another Bashan.

There is lot more healing work and several more steps have to be done due to the recent statements made by RSS Chief on Mother Theresa and her work for poor. When these actions matches praising words by Modi, it will help all those who were hurt and upset over the years.

There is an opportunity for many to learn more about Mother Theresa along with Catholic faith in general. It will help all of us to be a responsible citizens and appreciate those worked in their own way for betterment of our society and help poor without seeking any rewards or appreciation.

Let us pray to Mother Theresa to strengthen our people to dedicate on activities that will help the poor and neglected by caring on their needs and requirements.

Well said and proud of our catholic faith and practices to take care of poor and educate all those like to learn for a better society.

Hopefully, let us the see if Mr, Mohan Baghat or his nominee will be part of Sushmaji team to attend the ceremony in Rome.

There was a world wide criticism when RSS Chief questioned Mother Theresa's work for the poor and motives around two years ago. His choice of words had hurt many faithful Christians around the world and may be he himself wonder today does it makes sense at all on his speech on Mother Theresa.

It will be interesting to see if Mamata Banerjee who also noted that she will be attending the ceremony in Rome is part of Sushmaji's Indian delegation.

Let us pray to Mother Theresa that peace prevail around the world and all Christian are allowed to practice freely their faith and religion.
