Udupi: Sexual harassment of lecturer by vice-principal, students protest

Udupi, Aug 29 : Vice –principal of TMA Pai polytechnic college in Manipal had allegedly sexually harassed a lecturer on Saturday, Aug 27 and the students are protesting demanding the dismissal of him.

Srikanth Pai is the vice-principal. He hails from Kundapur.

As per details he went to the staff room on Saturday and allegedly sexually harassed the lecturer. She shouted for help and some people rushed and saved her.

On the same day, a case was registered at Manipal police station.

Students on Monday boycotted classes demanding the dismissal of Srikanth. 

Srikanth is yet to be arrested. 

Ranga Pai, the head of the college speaking to media said that Srikanth has been already suspended. "We have already started the process of internal enquiry. We will also consult the legal experts as the students are demanding dismissal. Soon we will resolve the matter. Action will be initiated as per law. We will cooperate with the police."

Students have said that they would not enter classes until Srikanth is dismissed. There are 932 students in the college.

Some sources said that Srikanth was head of the department in which the lecturer worked and had been sending unnecessary messages to her mobile phone.

Some said that Srikanth had misbehaved with girls in two previous instances.  

Manipal police were seen in the campus.

    This type of happening that too in the educational institution is very pathetic. Such incidents definitely tend to keep students morale very low. proper investigation and appropriate punishment is need of the hour.

    Srikanth is a repeat offender, previously such acts have occurred while he was a student, later while he was an HOD too. His own wife left him after the issue came to light some 5 years ago. Being an ex student we have seen his behavior with lady staff and students hence this is an act we are sure he could have done.

    Somehow this case tell me,something is here wrong.Many times men are the opfer.In a staff room sexual harassment?were there no other staffs?Is it his post that someone interested?let us wait and see.she should have informed the director before when it was repeated.It can be also I am wrong.was there a cctv camera installed.?It can help.Hope the truth will be out soon.punish the one whoever it is.

    CCTV camera can burst the myth here , now a days false / fake harassment cases r rising . Here the woman has to give substantial evidence , till then accused is still innocent . If it turns out b fake , then severe case has to b slapped on her and vice versa . Cannot rule out elopement angle , since 2 students complained of ' harassment ' already . Its simple , in a disputed environment , LOVE / AFFAIR / ELOPEMENT ==== Molestation . Rampant misuse of laws against men / boys . The students should also support principle and help him get a fair trial . Hope the justice prevails .

    This has happened in staff room, not in her accommodation to be thinking that she must have invited him. A vice-principal has free entry to a staff room but shouting when on enters is something worth pondering over !

    Yes, need fair investigation. Certainly there were prior advances that others know of, a harassment does not start spontaneously.

    May it be rape or murder, how does it help the society ? A responsible citizen must discourage both of these deeds.

    Education certainly helps, hence, we send our children to school. School staff is someone students look up to as role models, not to be misguided by events like this.

    Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when either: The conduct is made as a term or condition of an individual's employment, education, living environment or participation in a University community.

    If somebody can throw light and advise Srikanth Pai's particular role as above may be future course of action will proceed. The biggest question is IF THERE WERE ANY WITNESSES.
