India will be late by 50 yrs in achieving education goals: UNESCO

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) : Going by the current trend, India will be half a century late in achieving its global education commitments and the country needs fundamental changes in the education system if it wants to meet the 2030 sustainable development goals, a UNESCO report has said.

UNESCO's new Global Education Monitoring (GEM) report says that based on current trends universal primary education in Southern Asia will be achieved in 2051, lower secondary in 2062, and upper secondary in 2087.

India is expected to achieve universal primary education in 2050, universal lower secondary education in 2060 and universal upper secondary education in 2085, it said.
"This means the region would be more than half a century late for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) deadline," it added.

The report says there is an urgent need for greater headway in education and the sector needs a major transformation to fulfil the needed potential and meet the current challenges facing humanity and the planet.

It also talks of another report, Education for People and Planet, which, it said, shows the need for education systems to step up attention to environmental concerns.

"While in the majority of countries, education is the best indicator of climate change awareness, half of countries curricula worldwide do not explicitly mention climate change in their content. India is an exception, where currently some 300 million school students receive some environmental education," it said.

The statistics cited in the report have revealed only six per cent of adults in the poorest countries and only five in India have ever attended literacy programmes, once they pass the formal schooling system.

The report has also called upon governments of various countries to start taking inequalities in education seriously, tracking them by collecting information directly from families.

"The new global development agenda calls for education ministers and other education actors to work in collaboration with other sectors," it said.

The GEM Report lists various benefits that could come if education actors work in collaboration with other sectors.

The collaborative working may help delivery of health intervention through schools, contribution in increasing crop yields by 12 per cent and contribution of education in reducing population growth.

She was more into hitting back at people including Rahulji for twitter posts!. One more good news is that Indian IIT's have slipped in global rankings!!!. Yes please concentrate on sending AAP MLA's to jail!. This will solve most of India's problems!. Let our kids be eaten by dogs! And let 10 humans lose their life for 1 cow!!!. Teaching ABCD is no education but some of our people encourage to take fake certificate and copy and pass. Unless they punish such people than our people will be only certificate but not education.

According to United Nation's Millennium Development Goal (MDG) programme 270 million or 21.9% people out of 1.2 billion of Indians lived below poverty line of $1.25 in 2011-2012.
Then there are Millions who live under low income tag for whom day to day life and meeting the expenses is a major question than supporting their children for higher education.
And there a lot who in spite of basic education indulge in communal, religious and organizational orders and remain anti-social elements. Education achieved but mentality remains same.
We are today 1.2 Billion plus and achieving the goal is not as simple as the UNESCO declaration. We are still better than so many African or other backward countries of the World.

Most Asian nations give extreme importance to Education - both in terms of quality and quantity. Our education system is stuck in the 19th century still. Better and more educated people can effectively participate in the development programs such as Swachh Bharath, Digital India etc.In India in terms of absolute numbers we have highest number of illiterate people, the highest number of semi-literate people and highest number of people with degrees from questionable colleges and universities.

Already education reached a saturation point here in India , and unemployed educated is growing exponential each year . Now it came to a point where PhD's applying for sweeper jobs in government sectors , this utterly shocking trend shows underbelly of skewed ratio in demand / supply . What we need is better skill management , not mere academics .

The United nations utter aim is to spread a certain propaganda blaming it on gender injustice. With over emphasis on girls education we have waste of resources too . However highly educated girl is , she will choose a potential rich husband ( gold diggers ) and will not work after marriage ( mere house wives ). So whatever expenditure spent on education goes waste

Then, what sort of revamp has been incorporated in education system as per TV serial Minister's claim ? To teach the moral of 'Punnya-Koti' to be refraining from eating beef instead of truthfulness ?

I hope Bhakths don't come out saying this is the result of 60 years of Congi misrule while disregarding the changes Sanghi Govt brought and boasts about !

Thanks to a small percentage of IITans, Engineers/Doctors who quit jobs paying millions worth of salary to work for the slum children or in agricultural sector.

Let the Bhakts continue blaming missionaries for conversion and belittle whatever amount of education they started to impart to the poorest. Let them put stricter laws so that the missionary institutions gradually stop operations like one wing of Mother Theresa's group stopped adoption centres over difficulty due to amended laws !

    True Indian,

Its not correct to say that the educated cannot do a labour's job. What does a labour do ? Tills the land, cuts wood ? Cleans the surroundings, building work ? We put 100 people for such work but the world with modern technologies does it with just 10, utilising machinery to all of them. One got to be educated to handle such machinery.

We will remain where we are for next 100 years if we think that only the uneducated people should do low-class work. Our educated youth are loitering around waiting for a job after completing graduation.

    True Indian,

Have you ever stepped out of the borders of your country ? A simple example is, a mall used to mop the floor with malnutrition-ed, filthy uniform wearing Asian cleaner. Now, a motor zooms past shoppers cleaning the floor in a jiffy !

Sand covered roads were mopped with hand-mops by Asian workers. Now, a motor passes-by, sweeping the sand along.

Where are Robots in these functions ? Those on the driving seat are still Asians, but just one instead of 10 ! But now they look healthier, cleaner and happier !

This is the change gentleman, of incorporating machinery in our requirements !

Indian, as per your logic everyone in gulf countries are educated and they do not do labour job and every Indian who goes to do that labour job are uneducated. have you been out of Mangalore so far?? There is no connection to education and labour job. You educate yourself for the sake of education but you can do your own labour works like cutting the trees, painting the house etc..
