Doctor-sweeper duo arrested for raping dengue patient in ICU

Ahmedabad, Sep 9 (PTI) : A doctor and a sweeper of Apollo Hospital in Gandhinagar district of Gujarat have been arrested in connection with the rape of a 19-year-old dengue patient who was admitted in the ICU for treatment, police said today.

Both the accused --Dr Ramesh Chauhan and sweeper Chandrakant Vankar--from Apollo Hospital, located at Bhat village in Gandhinagar were arrested yesterday.

"We have arrested Chauhan and Vankar on the charges of rape. The girl alleged that both of them took turns to rape her on the night of Saturday and Sunday at the hospital where she was undergoing treatment for dengue," said Adalaj police inspector A K Pandya.

The duo has been remanded to police custody by a local court till tomorrow. The girl was raped in the ICU unit of the hospital, where authorities do not allow relatives of the patient to stay back in the night.

On September 7, the girl had lodged a complaint with Adalaj police alleging that she was raped by the hospital sweeper, whom she identified as Chandu, besides a doctor, whom she could recognise by his face. Based on the complaint, police had lodged a case under section 376 (C)(D) of the Indian Penal Code for rape and subsequently arrested Vankar and Chauhan, said Pandya.

Apollo Hospital said that they are cooperating fully with the police in investigation. "The ward where the incident took place has 14 staff working round-the-clock, and is equipped with CCTV cameras. We are co-operating fully with the police which is examining CCTV footages and carrying out the investigations," said a statement issued by the hospital.

I have been accused of having Namophobia by a bhakth when I blame BJP, RSS or BD when there is blame. Orissa incidents, UP incidents have nothing to do with BJP but PM of Bahrain stood up to help that poor man but not our own PM. When things go wrong in Karnataka, bhakths wake up suddenly to shout tat Siddu. Where are the bhakths now when this is happening in the MODEL STATE of India?? I am not sure that this is what BBC reported " The doctor is a Pakistani national who has been working in India on a long-term visa since last year, NDTV reported" If it is true, how A person from HELL is working in the MODEL state of India??

    Shame on Chauhan and Vankar.

What sad state of affairs in most of BJP ruled states, so sad that patient is getting raped by those she trusted to recover from illness. We should appreciate courage of this girl to go police station. How many others were victimized and afraid to go police station.

If there is some sense with State Government, all CCTV footage should be taken over by police and reviews thoroughly for other instances and victims also.

The said Doctor Chauhan and sweeper Vankar be isolated separately so that possible evidence is not destroyed.

Need of the hour is protection and safeguard of the young victim girl. Look at the confidence she has now to face family, friends, and locals. In such village situation, most people know each other. Government should provide proper protection and safeguard so that legal proceeding takes place as per law.

Modi should use this example in Mann Ki Baht to console such victims and help them accordingly to look forward and live without fear.

@lidya- please do not take your frustration on baba's.
Please ask shutting down of such hospitals. At least government hospital to be upgraded as per current population so it provides facilities equal to private. Instead of privatization in Udupi they should start billing system for well to do people...

Sorry Alan, VIJAY have a reason for it. Perhaps you should also read news around the world and from other sources too. BBC said " The doctor is a Pakistani national who has been working in India on a long-term visa since last year, NDTV reported." Vijay might have picked up from NDTV just like BBC picked from. If that doctor proved to be from Pakistan, what are you going to do?? Just vanish from here forever??

For rapist monsters, not dengue not AIDS, there should be a system of gradual melting down of the organ as soon as forceful thrusting is applied !

So that there will be fear of losing potentiality upon intent of rape !
