Jamie Murray-Soares win US Open men's doubles title

New York, Sep 11 (IANS): Britain's Jamie Murray and Brazil's Bruno Soares bagged their first US Open men's doubles tennis title, routing Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia Lopez 6-2, 6-3 in the summit clash.

The fourth seeds served and returned better to control the match from start to finish, striking 27 winners to the Spaniards' 17. They also committed just 11 unforced errors, 10 fewer than their opponents on Saturday, reports Xinhua.

Carreño Busta and Garcia Lopez were vying to become the second Spanish team to capture the US Open men's doubles title after Emilio Sanchez and Sergio Casal in 1988.

However, nerves were the story at the start of the contest as both teams lost their opening service games, but whereas Murray and Soares settled down the Spaniards were broken in the sixth and eighth games to lose the first set in 37 minutes.

The Spaniards had a chance to grab some momentum in the seventh game of the first set when they battled back to deuce by winning three straight return points, but Murray and Soares righted the ship in time to take a 5-2 lead.

At the start of the second set, Carreño Busta and Garcia Lopez had two break points with Soares serving at 15-40 but proceeded to lose four straight points to go down 1-0.

The Spanish duo then squandered a 40-0 lead en route to being broken in the ensuing game, which ended with two straight winners at the net by the return team.

Carreño Busta and Garcia Lopez had a break point in the third game of the second set but failed to convert it. After that, Murray and Soares dominated their service games to close out the match in one hour and 18 minutes.

Murray -- the elder brother of the world's second-ranked singles player, Andy Murray -- and Soares each have now won a pair of Grand Slam doubles titles, having also partnered to win the Australian Open earlier this year.

The two players each had been in US Open men's doubles finals before with different partners but came up short in the championship match.
