Mangalore, Dec 16: “Cancer patients should be able to live a dignified life in their remaining days,” is the hope expressed by Dr PS Prabhakaran, vice chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka here on Sunday December 16.
He was delivering the keynote address at the inaugural function of the ‘National Oncology Update’ held at the Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH), at its conference hall premises.
Touching on the topic of the dreaded disease like cancer, Dr Prabhakaran informed that cancer is increasingly becoming a great threat to mankind. And in cancer, lung cancer is turning out to be one of the major causes of death. Global degradation, tobacco chewing and the like are the major sources of cancer, he said pointing out some of the causes.
Offering some insight into cancer prevention he said “Awareness and medical examination can control this fatal disease to a greater extent. Hence a keen sense of awareness is highly essential.” he opined. However, on a cautionary note he informed “Poor knowledge of food and wrong food habits may be a contributing factor to this disease.” In this context he suggested that the NGO’s and social service organizations can play a major role, in controlling the same.
Fr. Patrick Rodrigues, director of Father Muller Medical Charitable Institutions (FMMCI) in his presidential address said that no doubt speaking about cancer is frightening, but the comforting fact is that so much of information is available about the disease, it is mind boggling indeed.
In fact various surveys done so far indicate that very soon cancer might prove to be a nightmare in the region. The number of cancer patients identified in the various camps conducted by the hospital, is a clear indication in this regard, was the information given.
Fr Denis D'Sa, administrator, FMMCH welcomed the gathering and Sanjeeva Rai, dean FMMC proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Suresh Rao, Head FMMOC and other eminent oncologists were present on the occasion.
