Mangalore Dec 16: In an unexpectedly shocking incident, six navy men created a ruckus under the influence of alcohol, by abusing the locals at Hampankatta near the old bus stand near Poonja International hotel within the city limits here in the late evening hours after 9.30 pm on Sunday, December 16.

Subsequently the police were called in to restore order to the chaos that followed.

According to sources the sequence of events is as follows. An Indian naval ship full of sailors had docked at the New Mangalore Port at Panumbur. Out of them, six navy men, after a hazardous journey and weeks at sea, reportedly decided to take a break and went on a revelry spree into town.

Once inside the city, they got under the influence of alcohol and in a state of merriment and banter, started creating a lot of ruckus. This upset the locals. Soon the navy men got into an altercation with the already irate citizens. It first began with arguments, followed by heated exchanges between the navy men and the local people. And soon it went out of control resulting in huge clashes between the two groups.

So much so the police had to be called in. Both the Barke and Bunder police personnel in large numbers immediately rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation.

However, when the clashes continued unabated with not even the police being spared, the latter had no option but to resort to lathi charge to control the situation.

According to an eye-witness account narrated to daijiworld, the public retaliated by beating up the Navy men for raising their hands at the police. As a result of this clash, one Navy personnel is reportedly seriously injured and admitted to the Wenlock hospital. Another Navy personnel has been taken into custody. The remaining four persons are said to have escaped from the police.

According to first-hand report received by daijiworld, the injured person is said to be hailing from Maharashtra and the other one from Haryana. Large crowds assembled at the spot and expressed their disbelief towards the naval personnel whose duty it is to protect the national seas.

Further details are awaited. Meanwhile the Barke police is investigating the case in detail.

Let us salute soldiers for their sacrifices and bravery but at the same time they cannot unleash their tension on civilians. The act in question was not of bravery. If every section of the society starts unleashing their tension on civilians what will be the state of the society because every one have their own tensions in this world and it is true the soldiers may have a larger quota of the same but will it be solved in this manner?

The ire of the public in the case may not be because they were from Navy or that they were drunk if we go by reports. Earlier to this several members of the forces might have walked down the street and may be every day many might be passing on the same road fully 'loaded' without any problems. But when one starts behaving the Rasthe Raaja in a drunken state then society reacts to bring down the level of intoxication .

However I wish the punishment be not so harsh- they seem to be already punished by the public.

I totally agree with the comments passed by Mr Harold, Siva and Nelson. It is the tragedy of the so called democratic set up where in few people disguise themselves as Political leaders ,NETAS, Government officials, enter like rats, eat and grow later to become bandicoots, loot the public property, amass the wealth, walk away unscathed.

The resources of the country supposed to be tapped, utilised for good of the common men and nation gets stuck deep in to the pockets of this shameless, dirty elements, buried forever thereafter named ‘Black money’. Unfortunately when this takes place right under the nose of civilised people and civilised society, neither the public nor the so called Protectors of the law, do not care to notice, leave aside, safeguarding the larger interest of society. If there is recruitment for the post of Police officer, there are many takers.

I don’t think it’s easy for a common, poor man to get a single star decorated on his shoulder, unless otherwise he shells out laks for stars. Where as when it comes to Armed forces, even for the officer grade, there are only few determined minds imbibed with highest morale of life, ready to face all odds of life, unlike ‘Comfort’ and ‘only the Comfort’ chosen by counterparts.

When these two classes come face to face, the result is violence. Of course, I do not support violence of any sort, nor justify armed men unruly action in public. But I definitely, think twice before point all of my fingers only on them. The circumstances under which this men work, when all of us sleep peacefully at home, with a confidence in mind, ‘Yes our armed force are alert’, needs to be considered. I am also of the opinion that the service conditions, benefits salary and perks, working atmosphere for this men in armed force must improve, so much so that, the armed force present status ‘Shortage of Human resource’, should vanish.

There should be more and more talented, capable young and energetic, principled youth ready to join the force, instead eyeing on money eating government departments. This also will create fierce competition among armed force job seekers and only disciplined lot will get the chance to serve the nation, unlike, may be some present existing, disgusted, frustrated souls joining the armed force just for the sake of employment as they fail to show their mettle in other fields, later exhibit their frustration on roads under the influence of alcohol.

Our law makers have time to think over in this direction?

Nobody will understand the problem of Naval sailors unless they experience the same. These young lads due to their stress might have enjoyed the evening and also with alcohol. But between the lines something gone wrong which is not disclosed here. Every coin has got 2 sides. Unlike someone behaved wrongly with the so called young disciplined naval sailers, I do not think alclhol has made them behave rudly.

There is also problem with our police department. Have they cordoned the area of dispute and send these 6 sailers safely the said ugly scene would not have created.I do not blame the police department as maturity did not prevail with the authority.

Also the communication gap seems to be existed between the sailors, local and authority. Do not blame these young naval lads unless we know the real cause. It seems behind the scene some mischief makers in order to extract the undue advantage of naval personnel ignorance of the area and their influence of alcohol might have created this fire.

The lesson we residents of Mangaolore should learn is at least the matured sensible person should have involved and pacify the situation. Calling police department was very wise move.

Any citizen of any country respects their armed forces. But when they are in the society, there is something called discipline and behavior. It is everybody’s responsibility including armed forces personnel to respect it in public. One can not violate the public behavior being armed forces with influence of alchohol. They would have shown even great appearance in public, because the armed forces have greatest discipline in our country. They should not get disrespected by themselves.

No one is above the law. These men are to restore the law and defend the country. But if their behavior is worst then animals, they to be treated as like any other citizen.

Armed forces do protect the country, and give life if needed be. Yes, citizens do pay respect to them when alive and in death. They are given more privileges by the country they serve. But just because they serve the country does not give them the benefit to break the law and abuse the public they protect.

Getting drunk in the public is breaking the law. There are many Citizens give their life for the country too, such as Miners inside deep mines digging minerals for the country to survive,Power line men risk their life to keep the Country moving and Citizens living, and so on. But these people do not get any respect at all. All Armed forces will be respected if they behave.

I strongly agree with Siva, navy personnel was on pleasure trip and that is only one time they get to see some enjoyment on land, whenever they visit cities this will be part of life. they dream to have fun and interact with the people is thier desire too. But this time it was alcohol which made them gentleman to mad man, hence first public should understand their problem first.

Secondly these days, there are few guys on the street and claim they are protector/guards of city and they want to use every tactics to use their force to destabilise the city atmosphere. these guys are having no other work but they will safeguard our sisters and needy persons on the street.

There is no excuse for misbehaviour especially for personnel of the armed forces. Such individuals should not only be court-martialled and thrown out from the forces but also undergo civilian trials. But what might happen in this case is the Navy will takeover the personnel and close the case with simple punishments and may be there will be lot of jokes. Usually justice is hardly done to the victims whenever Armed Forces are involved.

Army, Navy and Airforce personnel protect our country at a very high sacrifice of their life. But at the same time in peace locations, they expect that they be given very special privileges much beyond what can be provided legally or socially. when it is not provided they think people are ungrateful and attack the same people whom they protected pledging their life.

Probably this problem existed ever since armies existed. But look at politicians and Govt officials who come like rat and grow in to bandicoots, also expect and extort royal treatment not just for themselves but also for their respective spouses, Kith and Kin. That is extremely unfortunate

It was wrong on the part of the Naval personnel to have got drunk and misbehaved. This could result in court martial proceedings for them and that could be disastrous for their careers. However, one has to realise that service personnel go through thick and thin during training, postings at war and even at peace stations.

Therefore, one should condone their excesses, unless they are accused of serious crimes like rape, rioting, molesting, robbery, etc. Amongst all the Government departments, Armed Forces are highly professional, because they still follow the traditions left behind by the British, when they left India.
