Puttur: Window breaks in KSRTC bus, passenger pays up damage

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (PMD)

Puttur, Sep 20: Any damage to the bus at the time of travel, should be paid for by the travellers?  This question has surfaced as a result of the absurd incident where a KSRTC bus conductor demanded a compensation of Rs 500 from a passenger.

Ganesh, resident of Bannur in Puttur was travelling from Hassan to Uppinangadi in a KSRTC bus on Monday, September 19. The bus with registered number KA 19 F 2801 was plying the Bengaluru - Kundapur route, when at Nelyadi, the glass window at Ganesh's seat broke all of a sudden.

Ganesh, who was travelling with his wife, was asked to pay up for the damage, while he reiterated that he had nothing to do with the damage and refused to pay. The conductor pressed on the demand for compensation, warning Ganesh about the matter being taken to the authorities. As the bus pulled up at Uppinangadi, Ganesh was made to pay up before stepping out.

Ganesh, who spoke to the media later, wanted to know why passengers ought to pay for damages of the bus during the time of travel. Only KSRTC has the answer to it.

PASSENGERS SHOULD DEMAND FOR RECEIPT FOR PAYMENT OF ANY AMONEY DEMANDED BY THE CONDUCTOR OTHERWISE DO NOT PAY.
NOW HE CAN DENY WHAT HE DEMANDED AND RECEIVED.
I WONDER HOW GANESH SIMPLY PAID FOR DEMAND ?

Interesting. It is a Govt.bus .why should a passenger made to pay the damage? How can one say that the Panel or glas was already broken before Passenger got in?I am sure Ganesh will be concentrating on his Family than to break glas.He should complain to the Police or KSRTC about the incident.By the way who pays when students throw Stones and damage the bus or during the strikes ?deos this conductor pay ?shameful fellow.

It is only a matter of time till this incident will occur again.
As a frequent traveler on the Udupi - Mangalore route, I've been noticing an increasing fatigue crack on one of the large Volvo windows of KA-19-F-2444. The last time I traveled, the window could easily be displaced a good 4 inches outside the bus. I tried to bring this to the notice of the conductor who just nodded his head and went away. If that shatter proof glass weighing about 10 kgs falls mid-journey, it can cause disastrous consequences to other commuters, let alone a passenger having to pay a hefty fine.

A similar incident had happened way back in 1975 while travelling with my friend from Puttur to Subramanya by KSRTC bus. I was occupying the window seat and was chatting with my friend. All of a sudden the window glass broke and fell of my lap! The driver came to me for inquiry. I had nothing in my hand that could break the glass. He could not demand money from me but he requested me to write a letter to the authorities about the incident so that he was not held responsible. After a couple of days he came back to me and said the letter could not help him and he had to pay Rs 120 to KSRTC and he pleaded me to bear 50% of the cost. On compassionate ground I paid Rs. 60 and closed the incident.

The conductor must have made extra bucks for sure.
If this incident is highlighted through media and the conductors alleged role is exposed surely he is liable to pay back the money and also the KSRTC authorities should dismiss him from the job.
Some discipline should be brought into that man's life.
For instance some students or tough guy would not have obliged to pay.
