Mangaluru, Sept 27: Demanding justice to the bus-conductor Devdas, the KSRTC employees along with the various labour organisations staged a protest in front of the KSRTC bus stand at Lalbagh on Tuesday September 27 and alleged that the inhumane treatment by a police constable in the Kadaba police station abetted him for suicide.

Addressing the gathered the representative of AITUC, Praveen Shetty said that they have gathered to offer their sympathies to KSRTC bus conductor Devdas Shetty.

“He committed suicide to protect his self dignity as he was stripped and interrogated in the Kadaba police station by a constable. There was a chance that the issue could have been sorted out with the help of woman who alleged that Devdas had not returned the proper change. Rather the police constable took the statement of the female passenger only. We do not blame the police department but only the constable,”

“He was awarded the honour of best conductor in the state three times. If this is the condition of a government employee, then what can be expected in the police station when a common man enters it. The truth will come out if the constable is subjected to investigation by the higher officials.” he added.

Speaking on the occasion the district secretary of CITU Sunil Kumar Bajal alleged that it was a systematic murder and not just a suicide. “The constable had some sort of grudge on the conductor and hence stripped him in the police station. There is a clause which states that you cannot assault a government employee when he is on duty. It is highly condemnable that he was stripped. Along with the intense enquiry on the constable, the government must give compensation not less than Rs 10 lac to the family of the conductor Devdas as he was the sole bread winner of the family.”

Shashidhar Ambat of AITUC, district vice president of INTUC Walter Pinto, district president of INTUC Manohar Shetty and others were present.

The police think they are too great. I had been falsely accused by my sister saying that i was mentally torturing her just to take revenge for a silly fight at home. The police manhandled me and treated me badly before even enquiring about it. I was lucky that my mother was there to explain the matter to them or else i would have been beaten black and blue without any record. Police stations should be under CCTV surveillance because there is no such thing called human rights in india.

What a peaceful protest! Protest should be like this instead of taking revenge such as kicking out a Constable who is travelling without ticket which sometimes they do, in KSRTC bus and do the same thing the Constable had done to Devadas. Both are public servants right? Thank God it didn't happen. One must appreciate the patience of the organizers. Better take action against the erred Constable.

I do not understand the logic of this case. If a court clerk does not give back the proper change when paying the fines or any other Govt. or semi-Govt employees do the same thing and I report it to police, will the constable bring that Govt. Employee and strip him naked? Why this lady reported this case to police instead reporting it to the KSRTC. Police are poking their nose in each and every thing such as non repayment of debt, land dispute and other cases of civil nature. Police involve in almost everything now a days where there is scope for making some moola. They create lot of fear among the citizen with their muscle power and fake authority to wage false case. We need to clip their wings. It is too much and citizen should fight back.

Appreciate that the KSRTC employees took action on demanding justice. The lady is a root cause and she should be punished. The case should be filed against lady and constable both for the mental torture resulting his suicide.

OMG!!!did he die???Never expected this type of death news.My heartfelt condolence to his family.
If constable is found guilty for abetment to suicide, then please throw him to the same river.Once again I request the both state and central govt, the mental condition of a common man is no more same.Peace less life, stressful life two causes for extreme steps. Time to time counselling is necessary for all depts from pilots to conductors.

If the allegations were true, I would dismiss the Constable from service at once. (No suspension) Let him go to the court and prove his innocence, if any.

I have the highest respect for the late Mr. Devdas Shetty. He died a very honourable death. The police department should initiate an inquiry and punish the constable, if found guilty.

Every sensible person is behind this conductor for his sincerity. You seem to be either disconnected from reality or you find fault with his name? .. what exactly is your problem?
