100 held in tense Darjeeling

Darjeeling, Sep 28 (IANS): Over 100 people were arrested here on Wednesday after a clash during a shutdown called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), authorities said.

The GJM called the shutdown to protest against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's statement that Rs 4,000 crore had been allotted to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) over four-and-a-half years.

As Banerjee opposed the shutdown, the government, in tandem with the Darjeeling administration, took steps to ensure that shops, educational and medical institutions were open.

A few shops opened and some vehicles plied on the roads.

As many as 112 people were arrested after a clash between police and GJM members at Kurseong. A vehicle was vandalized at Pedong in Darjeeling district, police said.
