M'lore: Non-Invasive Treatment for Urinary Stones at KMC

Mangalore, Dec 23: A non-invasive treatment for urinary stones using extra corporeal shockwave lithotriptor using a German machine will be undertaken by the department of urology at the KMC Hospital here.
Informing reporters Dr. G G Laxman Prabhu from the department said that the lithotriptor uses shockwaves to fragment stones in various parts of the urinary tract to provide relief to patients without any invasive method or hospitalization.
Moreover he stated that its a day-care procedure sans anaesthesia and hence patients can return to work early with minimal post-treatment care. He said the motorized table will help better positioning of the patient and accurate focusing on the stone.
Further he added that the chances of achieving a stone clearance is exceptionally good in select patients, though a small percentage may require add on treatments like key hole procedures. Dr Sunil Deshpande, chief operating officer of KMC hospital informed that the hospital will have a full-fledged minimal access surgery department in the first week of January.
Free medical camp will be organized at the KMC hospital for patients suffering from hypertension between 10 am and 12 noon at the hospital premises in Attavar today, Sunday Dec 23.
