Mangaluru, Oct 6: The authorities have decided to bring traffic on Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75 to a complete halt from October 15 onward. The traffic will remain suspended till the second phase road concrete work is completed. Expected date of completion of work happens to be June next year.
As per the pre-condition, GVR Infrastructure, which has bagged the contract for Rs 89 crore, has already stocked materials required for road works. Officials said that once the vehicular movement comes to a halt, the development work of the 21 km tar road starting from Addahole will also be undertaken.
The new concrete road will be 8.5 metres wide. National Highways Authority of India officials are hopeful of completing the road work by June, 2017. The first phase of road work was undertaken and completed by Ocean Construction Co two years back. During that period too, traffic on this road has been blocked.
Although Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai, has been insisting on allowing one-way traffic for light vehicles during the road works, officials feel that this might give rise to accidents on the road besides creating bottlenecks in road works.
