Madikeri: Two youngsters mysteriously drown in Chelavara falls

Madikeri, Oct 8: Two college students who had visited Chelavara falls near Napoklu in the district for fun drowned there under mysterious circumstances. It is not known how both of them fell into the falls, and whether it was a case of accident, suicide or foul play.

The deceased happened to be Kottangada Sonu Somanna (18) and Bacharaniyanda Somanna (19), both final year BCom degree students of Sai Shankar College at Ponnampet.


Sonu Somanna was the son of Parvathi and Dileep couple from Balyamundur village. Bacharaniyanda Somanna was the son of Kuttappa and Rathi couple from Bellur village. They had together left in a motor bike to visit the falls.

They were part of a s even-member group of friends who undertook fun trips on Thursday. Five had gone to Kushalnagar, while the other two went to Chelavara. Both the groups were to meet at Ponnampet at 3 pm. But as the friends who went to Chelavara did not reach Ponnampet even after long wait, and they could not be reached on mobile phones, the friends went to Chelavara and found the motor bike of their friends parked there. When local divers conducted search inside the falls, the bodies were found on Friday.

The bodies were handed over to their respective families after conducting postmortem at Virajpet. A case about this incident stands filed in Napoklu police station.
