Mangalore, December 26: India is is a country that has the core essence of all the major religions, and we should be previleged to be Indians, said Veerappa Moily M, president, Administrative Reforms Committee.
He was delivering the inaugural address at Adla Christmas Night 2007, organized by Adla Network (Cable Provider of Moodbidri) here on Tuesday, December 25. The programme was held at Padmavathi Kala Mandir, Moodbidri near here, with a large crowd having packed the auditorium.
Undivided Dakshina Kannada is a garden of the diverse religions, faiths, cultures and beliefs. It is the responsibility of the civilians of the district to see to it that the garden is not trampled by any one. Doing damage to even a corner of the garden means damaging the whole garden, he added indicating that fabrics of secularism must be protected in the region.
He further said that India is the land of religious tolerance, which has been formed by the amalgamation of various faiths. Secularism has resided in 'every atom' of the nation. Bringing in a radical shift in this regard may lead to the annihilation of the 'generous-culture' of the nation.
Everyone has the right to follow his or her faith at home, but when it comes to community, everyone needs to show respect towards other religions; showing hatred towards other religion is doing sacrilege of one's own religion, he added.
'It is not enough that we protect and respect our religion, it is also essential that we respect other religions equally and we should not weaken the bonds of secularism. We should uphold the values like religious tolerance and we should be strongly determined in this regard," he suggested.
Amarnath Shetty, former minister, also delivered his message on the occasion.
The programme was chaired by Bishop Fr Aloysius Paul D`Souza. K Abhayachandra Jain, former chief whip, Dr Godfrey Mendes, dean, New York Institute of Technology and other guests of honour were present on the occasion.
Stephen Mendes, proprietor of Adla Network welcomed the gathering.
