BJP decries assault on college principal by student

Mangaluru, Oct 22: MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik and president of district BJP minority Morcha Joylus D’Souza have condemned the assault on Milagres College principal Fr Michael Santhumayor by a student named Mohammed Shahnawaz.

Capt Ganesh Karnik condemning the assault through a press release said “Education has left its own mark besides a good rapport between teachers and students in undivided Dakshina Kannada district. Teachers who have the responsibility to mould the future of students sometimes warn them as part of discipline. If a student assaults his college principal in the circumstances, what expectations can society have from him? The incident is most unfortunate. The student should be arrested and subjected to strict legal action without bowing to pressure to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.”

Both issued separate statements on Saturday October 22 relating to the incident that took place on Thursday, October 20.

Capt Ganesh Karnik

Joylus D’Souza

Joylus D’Souza in a statement said “The government has failed to frame rules and provide suitable protection to teachers. The morcha urges the deputy commissioner (DC) for swift legal action against the guilty without bowing to political pressure. BJP minority morcha will extend full support to the proposed district-wide campaign led by the Catholic Sabha.”

This guy is confident that he will be off the hook, otherwise he would not have done it. He dose not have any fear or shame or respect for elders in particular his own teachers. But some time we need to understand parents view as well. Do you think at this age he will listen to his parents? (assuming parents are good and humble) nope. he has his own type of friends circle to spoil him and he spoils others showing of his goondaism and power at this age. Forgetting these all are temporary in his career apparently which is doomed already.

WHATEVER the reason may be, one has no right to raise his hand on another and that too someone elderly and a teacher?! This is ridiculous. SHAME on the boy and his parents. Discipline and manners should be taught at home, clearly, in this case it wasn't. This guy deserves a sound thrashing. 75% attendance in each subject is mandatory as per education policy of Indian Universities and all good colleges adhere to it. Recently, even Bombay HC has ruled that the Principal can condone this attendance if the student has participated in approved cultural activities, NSS and NCC or was sick, on the production of participation/medical certificates by student. Other than that, if a Principal condones, he is doing injustice to education policy. Majority of colleges do not bother of this education policy requirement in India.

we cant come to conclusions by hearing at one side alone. obviously student has done mistake should be brought before law. What he has done could be seen clearly on cc tv footage. I must say my personnel experience - today’s priest who are holding principal’s post, most of them are arrogant and inexperienced for administration. Only because you are priest background you are eligible for administrate the collate or school , if you are priest then you can be principal or director. hardly one can find priest are taking any classes. Do not comment without knowing facts. The priest in reference is an educationist, he was Principal of Padua High Shcool for 11 years before being transferred to Milagres in June 1015.

Moreover, Fr. Santhumayor is not holding any post in Church administration, he is solely an educationist. Generalisation is inappropriate as regards to this priest.

It's not that he is mentally ill. He needs a good flogging and has to be put behind the bars. Or else, he should be buried alive with his head above the ground and stoned, as they do in the Gulf. Such students are a disgrace to the society.

First and foremost, laying hands on another person is a serious offence and this has to be dealt with an iron hand. We shouldn't take somebody for granted. Why did the student retaliate just for the simple reason when he was asked to attend regular classes? What nonsense is this? Can anybody tolerate such type of hooliganism??? No school/college can allow such nasty elements to appear for the exams if there is shortage of attendance. Of course, rules are rules and one has to strictly adhere to them. Otherwise, such students should be kicked out from school/college. Immediate strict disciplinary action should be initiated against him, so that such barbarious incident does not recur in the future. Leave aside politics. Whoever strongly condemns this heinous act is highly appreciated. This is my point of view.

I now most humbly appeal and urge the authorities concerned to take drastic legal action, without any further delay. Hope and pray that justice prevails soon.

Student misbehaved with a teacher, for which they have decided not to allow him to appear for exam with the reason of attendance shortage. That is wrong. when he misbehaved with a teacher you should have solved the problem, instead you took a revengeful action. a young man will feel, i have attended the classes , this attendance shortage is nothing but revenge. Here principal provoked him to take his action. for sure he might have felt Principal has spoiled his Life.

Sana, according to you, the Principal should go in search of culprit, fall on his feet and forgive him ? where is he ? Instead of hiding like a rat, with same guts how he slapped the Principal, let him come to Principal and beg for pardon and I am sure he will be pardoned by the Priest. However, even if he is pardoned by respectable father, law will take its own course to tame the student. He must have thought slapping a Priest is as simple as slapping his siblings. Now, he will not get even a job of a peon. Where are his parents ? They could have approached the Principal by now or the tree itself is bitter ?

These atrocities have to be stopped by all means. The prime objective of a student should be to concentrate on studies and amass knowledge and build careers. A teacher is A GURU to be respected, admired and honored.

During our days a teacher was allowed to cane a student for misbehavior and the parents sided the management.

In the present perspective, it is best that the student surrenders, tenders an unconditional apology to The Principal and appeals to be forgiven. The law of course will take its own course and if the student does not surrender, the police will have a way of finding him

For past few years the Mangalore is getting limelight for wrong reasons pub attack home stay attack vigilant attack on colkege tours etc. Etc which are of political nature. But the recent two incidents of keeping a live mobile in university ladies toilet by pg student and assaulting principal by a final student of a college are really agha in keralst and are new phenomenon to educationally forward district dakshina Kannada. Incidents chopping hand of a professor in Kerala for setting question paper which contained questions pertaining to a particular religion and beating a prof to death by student outfit reported from north India were unheard in our district. tThus acts needs to be condemned by civil society. Attacking principal of one of the good instution which stood for imparting quality education to the needy irrespective caste and creed is deplorable. Moreover the person being attacked is religious priest. Christian education institutions in dakshina Kannada played vital role in empowering youth through education at an affordable cost. I second Ajay Lobo's words. Had the boy involved been from the other community, BJP & VHP would have been on the roads accusing the priest of conversion.

We know who is want. Joylus should keep his opinion to himself.

You are the guys who attacked innocent people in church. Now just because the attacker is muslim, you are raising your voice. If the assaulter was hindu, then you would have supported the attacker. Hypocricy at it's best.
