MP questions Rahul's 'concern' for veterans

New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS): Questioning Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's "recently discovered concern" for defence veterans, Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar said his repeated letters to the UPA government and top Congress leaders on OROP had been ignored.

Chandrasekhar, in a four-page-long open letter, said he wrote five letters to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh between 2010 to 2012, twice to United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi in 2011, four times to then Defence Minister between 2010 and 2012 and to Rahul Gandhi in 2011.

"... All of them were met with either a 'can't do it' or a stony silence," claimed the Independent member from Karnataka.

"I had first written to you on OROP and other Armed Forces related issues way back in 2011, but you neither replied to it not took any action. It probably wasn't politically 'interesting' enough for you then. It took you years to even mention and get to that issue - and even then it was only before election 2014 as a pre-poll election stunt," he said.

"Perhaps you also need to be reminded that in 2008 the then Defence Minister A.K. Antony stated that the UPA government had not found the OROP demand acceptable," the letter said.

Chandrasekhar said he accepted "the premise that yours may be a case of belated wisdom and compassion dawning" but said it was "a bit trite to assume that past records of political parties will be forgotten and that the country doesn't realise how far we have come in the cause of serving and repaying our veterans in the past two years compared to the past four decades".

The letter comes on a day when Congress held a protest march against "disrespect" to the family of an ex-Indian Army Subedar Ram Kishen Grewal, who committed suicide on Tuesday. Rahul Gandhi was stopped by Delhi Police at the venue.

Gandhi said he was "detained", but police said they just stopped him.

Grewal committed suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday. He had come to Delhi to raise issues related to OROP and pensions and wanted to meet Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Nation has had enough of Rahul Gandhi's antics!

Never known a person lacking in skill and tactics as much as him and yet considering himself a politico.

He jumped into the foray.... in this same manner....during the Vemula's sucide case too.

Without even scrutinising the fact that the blatant discrimination at UoH was nothing new and, it could have been in itself a silent spillage of the Congress's false-show-of-concern legacy.

8 suicides prior to Vemula's had happened only during the UPA tenure. None of which, whatsoever, was interrogated or anybody for that matter held responsible.

When Congress, till the 8th sucide, had not bothered to address the issue where was the need, now, by RG to suddenly address the 9th case !!!

During the JNU incident, too, he chose to simply appear only to disappear after a day or two day's of pointless intervention.

In the meantime did he even realise the capital punishment for these terrorists, Yakub Menon and Afzal Guru, which the students were protesting was given by the judiciary during the time of the UPA governance.

So what do we understand of his meaningless decision to support these misled students !!!

Now it is the OROP issue... for which he wishes to champion. I bet here too he has landed abruptly and completely ignorant of its history.

This issue infact started in1973 when the then PM, Mrs. Indira Gandhi decreased the pension of Armed Forces by 20- 40 percent which was till that point of time 70 percent of their salary.

Later again Rajiv Gandhi in 1986, the then PM and head of MoD, reduced the basic pay of our Armed Forces which affected thousands of its officers and veterans.

And in both of the above said cases the decision was made without the consultation of the Armed Forces Headquarterses.

And as if these weren't enough, the two consecutive, Congress led UPA governments did not just fail to implement OROP they even demeaned the honour of our forces by approving a ridiculously meager amount of RS 500 crores whereas the required bulk was 8400 crores.

Then tell us again where on the earth has RG has the moral grounds to jump into the scene and act a saviour now !!!

The present govt as for now, within 2 1/2 years of them coming to power, has rolled out 5500 crores and has disbursed two instalments already which is far better an act than that of Congress.

You dont answers to any of their pleadings nor to their letters when you had the power to do so for a horrendous 44 years but later do not hesitate even a minute to remorselessly use the same personnel's grief and agony to further your cause?

Enough of this. The common man and the nation as a whole has had enough of embarrassment from RG lately on almost all national issues.

Let us urge the government to....
bring a rule for such protests and bring everyone related to stay in a compliance of it.

    The rule should

Pappu grieves or grins at the death of soldier. Why doesnt he visit the dead soldiers to died fighting and not someone who cowardly comited suicide. Both Pappu and kujli trying to take mileage. And those who did nothing for 40 years now talking about soldiers welfare. And cunning Kejri giving one crore. Whose money is he giving. When a farmer committed suicide in Kejri's meeting did Kejri show same concern. Shame on our politicians trying to take political mileage

OROP IS THE ISSUE BETWEEN RETIRED SOLDIERS AND THE GOVT. SINCE 40YEARS.
PRESENT GOVT. HAS ALREADY IMPLEMENTED PARTLY BY GIVING ONE INCREASE WITH THE SOLE INTENTION TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
SOLDIERS SHOULD SEE THE GOOD INTENTION OF THE GOVT. SPORTIVELY INSTEAD OF OPTING TO SUICIDE AT THIS STAGE.
PRESENT GOVT. WITH MAJORITY ONLY IN LOKASABHA COULD NOT PASS THE BILL IN RAJYA SABHA TO SAY 100% WHICH IF DEFEATED ONE INCREASE ALREADY GIVEN WILL BE GET REVERSED.
WITH THIS BACKGROUND IF RG/AK IS CONCERNED MEANS NOT FOR VETERANS BUT FOR UP ASSEMBLY ELECTION RESULTS IS TO BE NOTED.

HAVE YOU EVER RAISED THIS ISSUE IN PARLIAMENT IF YOU HAVE REAL CONCERN.
