Jaitley says Rahul 'exploiting tragedy' of ex-soldier's suicide

New Delhi, Nov 5 (IANS): Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday took a jibe at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of betraying soldiers and ex-servicemen by "lying" about OROP scheme implementation.

The BJP leader also termed it an "irresponsible behaviour" by a national leader to "exploit the tragedy" of the suicide of a former soldier over implementation of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme.

"No one should try to change a personal tragedy into political gain, especially a party whose fortune is already sinking," Jaitley told reporters here at a press conference.

He said that for 10 years, when the Congress-led UPA was in power, it did not initiate any meaningful step to implement the scheme.

"It was only before 2014 Lok Sabha elections that the UPA formed a committee to workout functional modalities. It was obvious that it was filled with political motives. If the UPA government was so much concerned, why did it not shell out a single rupee for the OROP?" Jaitley said.

Jaitley's comments came hours after Rahul Gandhi accused Modi of betraying soldiers and former servicemen by "lying" about implementation of the OROP scheme.

The Congress leader also sought a government apology for the police manhandling of the family of retired Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal, who killed himself by swallowing poison over the scheme for ex-servicemen on Tuesday.

Gandhi, who was detained by Delhi Police thrice in two days over the issue, told the media here that he met some 80 ex-servicemen and "they said what Modiji is calling OROP implementation is only pension enhancement".

"Narendra Modiji, you should stop lying and work to implement the OROP scheme," the Congress leader said.

For All who say Rahul Gandhi is doing politics in Ex-Soldier's suicide, I would like to remind a incident wherein Mr.Modi the then Gujarath Chief Minister flew to Mumbai during 26/11 encounter and was giving press conference in Mumbai accusing Manmohan Singh for being weak blah blah blah...He also visited Hemanth Karkare's house and offered 1 Crore compensation to his wife which she rejected to accept. The Home Ministry has given clear warning to all VVIP's not to visit Mumbai due to security reasons till the encounter is done. But no our Current PM has to exploit the situation no matter what. These are some of the cheap politics played by Modi to become the Prime Minister. Congress spokespersons dosent have the tongue to speak...How can they speak when there is useless jerks like Oscar sitting at the helm.

its like some are scared to write comments "MP questions Rahul's 'concern' for veterans"

Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote many letter to then PM MMS, Sonia, Rahul Baba, Antony

    did they act?

"Perhaps you also need to be reminded that in 2008 the then Defence Minister A.K. Antony stated that the UPA government had not found the OROP demand acceptable," the letter said.

    for what now congress crying?
OROP is not at all acceptable to them, current govt at least met some expectation of retire soldiers.

The Central Government of the day should not waste time resorting to the "Pot calling the Kettle black". Modi came to power promising governance irrespective of the limitations of the previous governments. He called the UPA inefficient. It is time to prove his efficiency. OROP was formally approved by the UPA 2 but left for implementation to NDA as they lost power. People are aware. Ensure that Justice is done to the ex-Jawans. The matter ends there. Don't keep beating your chest all the time and pointing fingers at others resorting to blame game. The Programme implementation of the Central Government are like the delivery of a 'Still born Child'.
