India to buy rescue aircraft from Japan for $1.5-$1.6 billion

Tokyo, Nov 6 (Reuters): India's Defence Ministry will agree on Monday to purchase 12 amphibious rescue aircraft from Japanese manufacturer ShinMaywa Industries worth $1.5 billion-$1.6 billion, the Nikkei news paper reported today.

Japan and India have been holding talks on the purchase for more than two years. It would one of Japan's first sales of military equipment since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lifted a 50-year ban on arms exports and it reflects growing defence ties between the two countries.

India's Defence Ministry will approve the purchase of 12 US-2 aircraft at a Defense Acquisitions Council meeting scheduled for Monday, the Nikkei reporting, citing senior ministry officials it did not name.

The deal will be included in a memorandum of understanding to be signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Japan from Thursday to Saturday, the Nikkei said, citing the officials.

During the visit, Abe will also urge Modi to expand its usage of Japan's high-speed train technology, the Nikkei reported.

Our meager exports against these massive imports is sure to weaken the Rupee further. In 2015 our export of defense equipment had been just 1.5k crores. So far beef exports have been our only savior in which we still maintain #1 position. And of course the low crude oil prices and very high petrol/diesel prices have kept our economy from collapse.

One can not put it that way as "waste of tax payers money"

One pays tax so that politicians ruling or otherwise can live comfortably. Only a small amount is used for development.
Such kind of huge purchases are required for "HUGE" kickbacks and do not even in your dreams you believe such "K\Bs" are only during UPA or any other Govt. BJP trying to hide their share blaming all the time some others for graft.
Time will tell. Even if Modi says he is clean, he can not be clean until he allows his subordinates may be involved in graft. "Clean chits" are given in such matters.
Can anyone do anything about it?
We can comment only in this kind of forums and then forget about it.
When the Govt. facilitates robber of 9000 crore to escape, can one think it is done without any kickbacks to anyone at all?
