New Delhi, Nov 11 (DHNS): As differences persist between the Centre and states over right to levy taxes, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday spelt out the outer limit for implementation of the Goods and Services Tax regime.
“GST has to be implemented by September 16, 2017, and if it is not implemented by then, then the states will not be able to collect their share of taxes and hence there is not enough scope to further delay the decision,” Jaitley said addressing the Economic Editors’ Conference here.
At the same time, Jaitley said the government was aiming to rollout the new indirect tax regime by April 1 next year.
The GST Council – which has representation of all states and the Centre – has been unable to reach a consensus on dual control on taxation rights and sharing of revenue.
However, Jaitley appeared unperturbed over questions on the GST Council possible failure to reach a consensus at an informal meeting convened on November 20 to thrash out pending issues.
