Mangaluru: Girl falls into manhole, suffers injuries- Case filed

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 17: A girl aged 12 fell into an open manhole at Bejai Sankaigudde and suffered injuries. The incident happened on the night of Tuesday November 15.

The girl was walking with her mother when the incident happened. The girl was walking on the plastic sheet lying on the road when she was suddenly swallowed by the open manhole. She was injured in the incident, and hospitalized.

A case about the incident stands registered against the engineer of the city corporation and contractor who have been responsible for managing the road improvement and maintenance works, stands filed in Urwa police station lhere.

This, one hopes, will come as an eye opener for the officials of the city corporation who have not done anything to provide protection to the pedestrians from broken cement blocks on the storm drains, broken concrete chambers on the roads, holes that are dug with impunity and interlocks that have been removed but not replaced after attending work. In most of the cases, injured people do not complain, and the officials seem to be sitting pretty in the knowleldge that they are not affected in spite of callousness on their part.

I don't understand. Why would you have a piece of plastic over an open manhole? How can you blame the Corporation? Damages should be paid to the girl and her family by the contractor.

WHY CASE AGAINST CORPORATION? AND NOT AREA CORPORATOR, WHO APPROVES THE WORK COMPLETION CERTIFICATE FOR PAYMENT.

Why only action against engineer and contractor ? Why not the Corporator of the locality ? Ultimately, a daily wager would be denied his pay and it would be business as usual until someone else falls.

Thank God, the girl is only injured. The Corporation officials must be arrested immediately and due punishment be given by the employer.

There should be proffesional safety officers in city corporation.and corporation must give first preference to safety of workers of their contractors and workers as well as other contractor workers working in high raised buildings in the city. Many similar incidents are taking place in the city and there are no precautionary measures been taken on it. Government should look into the matter and take the precautions as soon as possible.
