Hassan, Nov 26 (DHNS): An incident of a people stripping and assaulting a woman suspecting her to be a “police informer” has come to light belatedly at Byrapura village in Alur taluk of the district. The incident occurred last week.
Women’s Commission Chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai, on Friday visited the woman, who has been undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Hassan.
The woman told Nagalakshmi Bai that she worked as a police informer during the tenure of Ravi D Channannavar as the superintendent of police. She claimed that she used to inform the police about the illegal sand mining and transportation, digging borewells without permission, diesel theft and other crimes.
The victim explained that the villagers, who presumed that she was still a police informer, assaulted her with clubs, pipes, stripped and thrashed her. “If I had erred they could have lodged a police complaint. But they took law into their hands and thrashed me till I lost conscious,”she said.
Her 10-year-old son had lodged a police complaint. Now, the accused are threatening of attacking her with acid if she did not withdraw the complaint, she said.
Speaking to DH, Superintendent of Police Rahul Kumar said that complaint had been lodged against 11 people including seven women, at Alur police station. Four men have been arrested and released on bail. The women have been absconding and a search is on, he said.
Nagalakshmi said that she had directed the police to provide protection to the woman and she need not fear.
Speaking to media later, Nagalakshmi said that such incidents were so far reported from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. People should not take law into their hands, she said. A notice would be served to the police department seeking explanation,
Meanwhile, hundreds of women lodged a complaint with Nagalakshmi against the woman, alleging that she was involved in chit fund business and was cheating people. Hence, the women had thrashed her in a fit of rage. However, Nagalakshmi took the women to task for taking law into their hands instead of lodging a police complaint.
