Cuban President attends burial ceremony of siblings in hometown

Havana, Dec 7 (IANS): Cuban President Raul Castro participated in the internment of the ashes of his elder sister and brother Angela and Ramon Castro in their hometown Biran in Holguin province earlier this week, media reported.

The remains of the Castro siblings were placed in the family pantheon, where their parents and grandparents also rest, Xinhua news agency reported.

Angela was daughter of Spanish landowner Angel Castro and his first wife Maria Luis Argota, and she died in February 2012.

Ramon, Fidel and Raul were sons of Angel with his second wife Lina Ruz. Ramon, Hero of Labour of the Republic of Cuba, died in February 2016.

The family decided to bury them in Biran, also birth place of the recently deceased revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, as it was the place where they were born and developed a part of their history.

The farewell speech was given by Cuban historian Eusebio Leal. At present, the house where Fidel and Raul Castro were born is a museum due to its historical value.
